A Tale Of Narrative Annexation; Stories From Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven, Nazarudin Nazarudin
A Tale Of Narrative Annexation; Stories From Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven, Nazarudin Nazarudin
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper discusses strategies of appropriation of narrative heritage in literate and narrative histories on the island of Kisar. It shows that notwithstanding their sometimes literate characteristics, storytelling in competitive contexts still follows strategies that are typical for oral performances. This paper questions in how far literate and narrative historiographies can and ought to be separated from each other in Southwest Maluku.
"Hul Topol" - Fall Of The Moon A Narrative Of Etiologies From The Bunaq Of Lamaknen, Antoinette Schapper
"Hul Topol" - Fall Of The Moon A Narrative Of Etiologies From The Bunaq Of Lamaknen, Antoinette Schapper
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article makes a contribution to the documentation of the genre of oral literature known as zapal amongst the Bunaq, a Papuan-speaking group of central Timor. I present an annotated and translated version of the elaborate zapal entitled Hul Topol or Fall of the Moon. Hul Topol is a lengthy, multi-event story which gives etiologies spanning the realms of subsistence, cultural practice and natural order including animal behaviour and appearance.
The "Sugi Sakit" Ritual Storytelling In A Saribas Iban Rite Of Healing, Clifford Sather
The "Sugi Sakit" Ritual Storytelling In A Saribas Iban Rite Of Healing, Clifford Sather
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper describes a Saribas Iban rite of healing called the Sugi sakit. What distinguished this rite from other forms of Saribas Iban healing was that it incorporated within its performance a long narrative epic concerned with the adventures and love affairs of an Iban culture hero named Bujang Sugi. Here I explore the language used by Iban priest bards both in telling the Sugi epic and in performing the larger ritual drama in which it was set, and look, in particular, at how the Sugi epic, which was otherwise told for entertainment, was integrated into this drama and recast …
Dairi Storytelling And Stories In The Batak Reader Of Herman Neubronner Van Der Tuuk, Clara Brakel Papenhuyzen
Dairi Storytelling And Stories In The Batak Reader Of Herman Neubronner Van Der Tuuk, Clara Brakel Papenhuyzen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In this article I first discuss how texts of Dairi stories collected in the nineteenth century by Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk relate to storytelling, and question whether the development of written versions of stories necessarily endangers the practice of storytelling. Then I investigate how written versions of Dairi stories in Van der Tuuk's Batak Reader relate to each other and to the printed text, based on texts in manuscripts collected by Van der Tuuk. In conclusion I discuss the possible aim of Van der Tuuk's Batak Reader, focussing on the Dairi section, which has not been dealt with in …
Flat Puppets On An Empty Screen, Stories In The Round; Imagining Space In "Wayang Kulit" And The Worlds Beyond, Bernard Arps
Flat Puppets On An Empty Screen, Stories In The Round; Imagining Space In "Wayang Kulit" And The Worlds Beyond, Bernard Arps
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The puppets are flat, the screen against which they are placed and moved is white and devoid of scenery. In what kinds of space do the stories of the classical shadow-play of Java, Bali, Lombok, and the Malay world unfold despite this double flatness? How do performers use not only puppets and screen but also music and language to bring space into being? What must spectators know and do to make sense of these storytelling techniques? As a contribution to the narratological study of the multimodal making of storyworlds, I demonstrate that wayang kulit caters for different degrees of interpretive …
The Art Of Storytelling In Old Javanese Prose As Illustrated By The Story Of Ekalawya, Willem Van Der Molen
The Art Of Storytelling In Old Javanese Prose As Illustrated By The Story Of Ekalawya, Willem Van Der Molen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Scholarly attention for Old Javanese literature so far has mainly focused on poetry. The apparently simple nature of narrative prose texts, while making them excellent sources for linguistic and lexicographic research, at the same time denies them any literary value. In this article an impression is given of the art of storytelling in one Old Javanese prose story, taken from the Adiparwa of around A.D. 1000. Quite unexpectedly, a sophisticated tradition unfolds in which a rich variety of devices enables the storyteller to create a meaningful world of words.
Moens'written Transmission Of Dalang Lore, Victoria M. Clara Van Groenendael
Moens'written Transmission Of Dalang Lore, Victoria M. Clara Van Groenendael
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Much of the storytelling in Java is the profession of the puppeteers (dalang; also spelled dhalang) who perform and direct shadow theatre plays (wayang). They improvise their stories in the context which their performance requires. Unless commissioned to do so by a patron, it is very unusual for a dalang to sit down and actually write out a story (lakon). In the early decades of the twentieth century in the area of Yogyakarta, a kind of storytelling mini-industry arose at the instigation of some western scholarly patrons and laymen interested in Javanese popular culture. One such patron was Ir. J.L. …

The Pig Story "Tiboi Sakkoko"; Storytelling Of Kinship, Memories Of The Past, And Rights To Plots Of Ancestral Land In Mentawai, Juniator Tulius
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper examines some significant elements of the pig story (tiboi sakkoko). This tale contains crucial information about the collective identity, ancestors and historical events affecting particular Mentawai kin-groups. As families do not preserve their culture and traditions in written form, storytellers of kin-groups have narrated the pig story from generation to generation so as to preserve it carefully. In the course of time, storytellers establish particular ways of telling their stories so as to remember the content and plot of the stories easily. Through the pig story, members of kin groups also recollect their ancestral place of origin and …
Telling And Selling; Literary Fiction In Early Malay Language Newspapers In Colonial Indonesia, Joachim Nieβ
Telling And Selling; Literary Fiction In Early Malay Language Newspapers In Colonial Indonesia, Joachim Nieβ
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
When newspapers in the colloquial Malay language appeared in the Dutch East Indies in the middle of the nineteenth century, they did more than just publish news reports and advertisements. They also created a new platform for the telling and distribution of literary fiction. In effect, literary texts soon played an important role in the vernacular print media. The first part of this article analyses the attraction of newspaper literature from the perspective of both the reader and the editor in general and gives a survey of the various forms of literary genres which can be found in newspapers in …
The Installation Of Prince Mangkubumi; Performing Javanese History, Els Bogaerts
The Installation Of Prince Mangkubumi; Performing Javanese History, Els Bogaerts
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Representation of Javanese history in performance plays an important role in the self-characterization of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. It legitimizes the power of the rulers and strengthens the identity of the city and its inhabitants. The audiences know the stories and this is part of the fun. In the study of oral traditions it is essential to take these performances into account. In the stories featuring famous political figures from the history of Mataram and Yogyakarta, there is an intricate relationship between the written and the spoken word: all are based on both oral and written traditions and are …
Some Notes On The "Pantun" Storytelling Of The Baduy Minority Group Its Written And Audiovisual Documentation, Wim Van Zanten
Some Notes On The "Pantun" Storytelling Of The Baduy Minority Group Its Written And Audiovisual Documentation, Wim Van Zanten
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Baduy pantun stories are part of the larger Sundanese oral tradition of pantun storytelling in west Java. The stories recount the deeds of the nobility of such old Sundanese kingdoms as Pajajaran and Galuh. Although the Baduy still recite the pantun stories in their rituals, in the larger cities to the east of the Baduy village Kan k s pantun recitation almost disappeared. On the basis of short periods of fieldwork in and around Kan k s village between 1976 and 2014, in this essay I shall discuss Baduy pantun storytelling. I shall summarize earlier major publications and analyse some …
Why Do They (Still) Sing Stories? Singing Narratives In Tanjung Bunga (Eastern Flores, Lamaholot, Indonesia), Dana Rappoport
Why Do They (Still) Sing Stories? Singing Narratives In Tanjung Bunga (Eastern Flores, Lamaholot, Indonesia), Dana Rappoport
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In eastern Flores, on the Tanjung Bunga peninsula (among Western Lamaholot speakers), several times a year, ritual narratives (opak) are performed on a square dancing area, where all the clans of the same ceremonial land meet. Three types of narrative are sung, according to three kinds of rituals. The article explains the context, content and performance details of these stories, performed all night long. Why do the various clans continue to sing all these narrative? What values do these long poems have for people who sing them? Until now, studies on this subject have been remarkably few, and not even …
Images Of God In Toba Batak Storytelling, Johann Angerler
Images Of God In Toba Batak Storytelling, Johann Angerler
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper examines the ways in which God the Creator, the High God, is described in Toba Batak folk-tales. The sources for this investigation are stories recorded in pre-colonial (around 1850), colonial and post-colonial times (up to 2014). In different stories the High God can appear under various names, forms and gender, and resides in various places never inhabited by humans. Unlike a Deus otiosus, the Toba Batak High God is not "inactive" after creation, but continues to be involved in the life of mankind through local or supra-local manifestations. Although he rules the realm of death, he is nevertheless …

Causing A Racket: Unpacking The Elements Of Cultural Capital In An Assessment Of Urban Noise Control, Live Music, And The Quiet Enjoyment Of Private Property, Sara Ross
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
I examine the tension between and the treatment of the elements of cultural capital within dynamic mixed-use spaces, and posit that Canada's current noise control and noise pollution legislation, by-laws, and case law demonstrate a hierarchical protection framework placing greater importance on the "quiet enjoyment of private property" over live music culture, where performances are often the subject of noise complaints. While the elements of cultural capital valued by those who favour the value of quiet enjoyment of private property are well represented throughout legislation, by-laws, and case law, the elements of cultural capital valued by those who favour the …
Circus As Idée Fixe And Hunger, Anna-Sophie Jürgens
Circus As Idée Fixe And Hunger, Anna-Sophie Jürgens
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Circus as idée fixe and Hunger" Anna-Sophie Jürgens discusses circus fiction in which characters often display extreme, intense psychological traits. They are for example irascible, pyromaniac, sadistic, or megalomaniac. Particularly striking are protagonists with alternative psychological attitudes in fictional circus texts of the twentieth century such as Franz Kafka's hunger artist, Michael Raleigh's ringmaster Lewis Tully or Richard Schmitt's aerialist Garry, who can be seen as incubators of circus-related idées fixes. These literary circus characters develop fixations on circus that manifest themselves as a physical sensation of desiring circus like food, in other words: in circus …
Genre Categorization In Contemporary British And Us-American Novels, Carlos Ceia
Genre Categorization In Contemporary British And Us-American Novels, Carlos Ceia
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Genre Categorization in Contemporary British and US-American Novels" Carlos Ceia discusses a certain type of resistance to genre categorization in many novels in contemporary literature. Many British and US-American contemporary novels show patterns in narrative creativity where novel-writing techniques are sometimes more important than the traditional subject matter driven work of fiction. Ceia reviews experimental/metafictional novels which do not show intent to fulfil an aesthetic role pre-determined in a certain moment in history. Not having this kind of burden before them, many contemporary British and US-American novelists devote their artistic imagination more to the "potential" of the …

Power And Privilege: An Exploration Of Decision-Making Of Interpreters, Debra Russell, Risa Shaw
Journal of Interpretation
This article presents the findings of a study conducted with Deaf and hearing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters from Canada and the United States who interpret legal discourse and legal interactions. This qualitative research study was designed to explore constructs of power and power dynamics that emerge in interpreted interactions. Sixteen interpreters, with at least fifteen years of experience in legal interpreting participated in an on-line survey; nine also participated in focus groups. This study found intersections among power and privilege, interpreters' sense of agency, their conceptualization of the task of interpreting, and their training. Participants reported situations where the …

Ireland Defined As Place, Halley Andrews
Ireland Defined As Place, Halley Andrews
Honors Theses
Ireland is a country filled both with rich land and rich culture. In this project, I undertook to better understand this beautiful country by examining it in terms of place and space, and also by studying and analyzing its literature. I discuss the complex relationship between space, a physical location, and place, the meaning given to a certain location and construct a “tablecloth model” that I then use to analyze the place and space seen in modern Irish literature, examining writers such as Seamus Heaney, William Butler Yeats, and Patrick Kavanagh. I compare the authors’ and poets’ sense of Irish …

In Vivid Colors: The Impact And Relevance Of The Browne Popular Culture Library At Bowling Green State University, William Blick
Publications and Research
“Popular Culture,” as a field of study, has often been met with skepticism. However, it has now been acknowledged by academics that the study of popular culture is an important component for the understanding of social theory and criticism, as well as many other areas of research. The United States has a vibrant background of cultural history due to the diversity of world influences on its music, literature, film, and artwork. The Browne Popular Culture Library at Bowling Green offers a varied selection of American pulp, music, film, literature, memorabilia and ephemera. In fact it is so comprehensive, that it …
Defining And Displaying Gallo: Language And Ideology In Upper Brittany, France, Sandra Keller
Defining And Displaying Gallo: Language And Ideology In Upper Brittany, France, Sandra Keller
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines discourse practices in and about Gallo, a marginalized Romance language of Upper Brittany, France. Specifically, it explores how various Gallo social actors (advocates, performers, teachers and students) defined, labeled and displayed Gallo, as they constructed it as a language capable of participating in modernity, producing local authority, and forging links with loved people and places.
Gallo was popularly imagined as part of a rural past and dismissed as a “deformation” of French, unlike the Breton language, which stood as a salient emblem of Brittany’s cultural distinctiveness. This dissertation elucidates the ideological and everyday consequences of using this …
The Cultural Politics Of Affective Bureaucracy In Service Delivery To North Korean Refugees In South Korea, Seo Yeon Park
The Cultural Politics Of Affective Bureaucracy In Service Delivery To North Korean Refugees In South Korea, Seo Yeon Park
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the affective dimensions and intersecting politics of service operations for North Koreans, focusing on semi-government institutions, Hana Centers in two different regions of South Korea. It probes into how bureaucratic service institutions for North Koreans operate on the ground using affect-laden languages and practices in creating a specific type of clientele subjectivity. This study also points out how the state bureaucracies identifying themselves as “practical” and “neutral” agencies reveal contradictory and fragmented governing which is antithetical to how the state institutions are imagined. There are underlying politics working in the realm of a so-called neutral service agency, …

A Cultural History Of Gambling, Don Feeney
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
This presentation will explore the different and conflicting images of gambling and gamblers as reflected in more than 2000 years of art, literature, music, and film. Images of gambling range from sophistication to foolishness, while images of the gambler range from the glamour of James Bond to the buffonery of the Marx Brothers to the tragedy of Dostoevsky. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the implications of these images for gambling research, awareness, treatment, and prevention.

Centralized, Decentralized, Distributed: Disruptive Technology In Distance Education From "Sunrise Semester" To Present-Day Moocs, Rosanna Flouty
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lessons from early academic television courses from the 1950s guide an assessment of current disruptive technologies that shape Massive Open Online Courses (known as MOOCs) and other informal online learning opportunities today. This dissertation explores some of the unique contributing factors that led to the creation of Sunrise Semester (1957-1982), a popular network television program co-produced by New York University and CBS that offered college credit to viewers. Despite the fact that the show aired at dawn and rarely included one-on-one interactions with professors, Sunrise Semester aired for nearly twenty-five years and attracted a devoted viewership of over two million …
