Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation analyzes the strategies that Spanish and Hispano-African authors employ when writing about Africa in the contemporary novel (1990-2010). Focusing on the former Spanish colonial territories of Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, I analyze the post-colonial literary discourse about these regions. This study examines the new ways of conceptualizing Africa that depart from an Orientalist framework as advanced by the novelists Lorenzo Silva, Concha López Sarasúa, Ramón Mayrata, María Dueñas, Fernando Gamboa, Montserrat Abumalham, Javier Reverte, Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa, and Donato Ndongo. Analysis of the textual evidence in Martín Gaite's short stories and novels demonstrates that self-actualization is one of life's most important achievements. For this reason, perhaps, she has been acknowledged primarily as a feminist writer, but analysis indicates that it is her search for an interlocutor that is the primary underlying message that underscores all of her fictional works. She creates narratives that require interaction with narrative interlocutors which are designed in the narrative processes of her texts. Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris

Description of a fourteen week course taught by Michelle Loris, professor of English at Sacred Heart University. The course, titled Recent Ethnic American Fictions, introduced students to several concepts from contemporary literary theory. The theories included New Criticism, Deconstruction, Cultural Studies, New Historicism, and Feminist Theory. The assumption was that these concepts would give students the tools to become critical readers, which would then provide them with a deeper understanding of these multicultural novels and their particular cultural contexts.

For a semester, reading and thinking about these multicultural novels engaged and challenged the students' assumptions about themselves and the …

Many previous efforts to come to terms with the problem of autonomous consciousness and of self-construction in Nabokov's work have done so in the sphere of psychoanalysis, and have therefore found it necessary to make a foray into Nabokov's tireless polemic against the school of thought. Perhaps, however, an examination of what may be called "the third-person self" provides a way of apprehending Nabokov's conception and representations of consciousness in such a way that a detour through that well-travelled territory may be avoided.

The problems presented by this group are of primary importance, not only because the Indians represent such a large percentage of the population but also because factors such as modern communications make the indigent aware of his own misery as well as of the vast well-being which other groups enjoy.
