The Ghost Of Robinson Jeffers, Temple Cone

This article explores the paradoxical figure of the ghost in Robinson Jeffers’ poetry as a means of understanding his complex relationship with human presence in nature. In poems like “Tor House” and “The Place for No Story,” Jeffers’ spectral self-representation embodies both his desire for integration with the natural landscape and his ambivalence about human impacts on the environment. While Jeffers strives for an ecocentric vision that would minimize human presence, his use of the ghost figure reveals the inescapable trace of human consciousness in environmental perception and expression. In his poetic search, Fouad Gabriel Naffah states his conception of a poetic image revealing the absolute and the universal, his verbal adventure which consists of disintegrating the conventional language with sclerotic forms in order to have access to the authenticity and to ensure the everlasting poem. He also sets out the poetry of the imaginary which, through a dialectic and harmonization of contradictories, extends all over the universe to include and reach the study of the eternal return that satisfies his longing for eternity.

In this essay, I explore the radical reframing of the traditional werewolf narrative with respect to the figure of the double and the abject female body in the Ginger Snaps werewolf trilogy. Notable theorists discussed herein include Barbara Creed, Carol Clover, Julia Kristeva, April Miller and Robin Wood.

Throughout both its folkloric and cinematic history, the creature of the werewolf has been constructed almost invariably as a male monster suffering within a Jekyll and Hyde-like narrative of the double. Outside of legal history, studies of early modern libel have focused on libelous verse and are concerned with the literary and politico- historical features of the material. 1 I hope to both add to and diverge from this body of scholarship by exploring libelous letters, tying the legal ramifications of letters deemed libelous to a more extensive perception of their cultural meanings. 香港是一個迅速發展的商業化海港城市，其耀人的經濟成就，曾是英國殖民者的驕傲。但殖民銃治者對香港的看重，主要是它作為「轉運港」經濟利益和政治上的戰略意義，對於文化和文學，除在大學推行英國體制外，基本上採取不干預的政策。游離於殖民者的文化秩序之外，超脫於家國政治爭鬥之上，冷戰時代的香港的文化與文學似乎有大陸與台灣所沒有的自由與超然性。李歐梵先生站在自由知識份子的視野，曾著文提出，香港夾在兩個政權之間，形成了一種政治上的邊緣空間：「在兩岸政府言論的控制之下，大陸和台灣不准談的，香港可以談；換言之，香港反而形成了一種可以在報章雜誌上論政的『公共空間』。」他認為這種邊緣性不僅使香港成了政治上的「飛地」，也使之具有了文化上混雜性和超越性：「它可以在幾種文化的邊緣——中國、美國、日本、印度——卻不受其中的宰制，甚至可以『不按理出牌』，從各種形式的拼湊中創出異彩。」

李歐梵先生的觀點富有真知灼見，對研究九七「回歸」之前的香港文學很有啟發。但「三不管」的邊緣實際上也是各種政治勢力角力的場所；而文化的混雜性，一方面有助於通過「國際視野」克服自己的封閉性，但另一方面也可能受時尚和市場的牽引，影響文化探索的重心和持續性。本文試圖通過冷戰時代香港文學的複雜性，探討其在現代中文文學格局中的特點、位置和問題。

Tragic No More?: The Reappearance Of The Racially Mixed Character, Suzanne W. Jones

During the nineteenth century and early in the twentieth, the tragic mulatto/a figured prominently in American fiction, only to recede after the Harlem Renaissance when African-American writers called for "race pride" and racial solidarity and to disappear entirely in the late 1960s after the Black Power movement ushered in racially conscious concepts such as "Black Is Beautiful." Since 1990, however, the mixed black-white character has made a significant comeback in American fiction. Contemporary representations suggest that choosing one's racial identity is only slightly less difficult than it used to be because of American society's conflation of skin color and identity. …

Complications seem inevitably to arise whenever one tries to define either regionalism in general or any specific region like the South or the Great Plains or to categorize the art and artifacts that come from or relate to that area by means of such language. Commentators occasionally try to take the easy way out of these taxonomic difficulties by simply declaring that “writing is writing,” by which reductive expression they apparently mean that all writing is “universal” in nature (the local manifestation of some “universal language”) and that, therefore, all that varies from “region” to “region” is the inflection. El acento ortográfico es uno de los aspectos del español escrito más difíciles de dominar para los hablantes nativos y los hablantes del español como lengua de herencia. Si bien algunos acentos ortográficos sirven para distinguir persona y tiempo verbal, y para diferenciar homógrafos, el acento escrito tiene una carga funcional relativamente baja. Sin embargo, la colocación incorrecta del acento estigmatiza al escritor, quien puede ser juzgado como menos inteligente que la persona cuya escritura muestre un dominio perfecto de aspectos mecánicos.
