Although the influence of the Chinese culture on Ezra Pound has long been recognized in the study of his Cantos, the question of whether his work should be regarded as a "transmission" or an "invention" requires a more substantial consideration of both his work and the Chinese tradition. This thesis attempts to supply an evidence to T. s. Eliot's answer to the question about Pound's status regarding the Chinese culture--namely, that Pound was "the inventor of the Chinese poetry for our times." Economic conditions during the 1930s caused unprecedented problems for the American people. The most obvious feature of the Depression--high unemployment--was particularly discouraging since no group of workers was spared from the realities of hard times. After experiencing relatively prosperous and comfortable lives during the Twenties, thousands of professionals and service personnel joined blue-collar workers in soup lines and charity programs.

In this article, Helen B. Petrullo utilizes several documents in the Dorothy Thompson Papers to shed new light on the break of her husband Sinclair Lewis with publisher Harcourt, Brace. It was previously thought the break was impulsive, but the documents reveal Dorothy Thompson had a significant influence on Sinclair Lewis' decision. Also describes the relationship between author and publisher in the twentieth century.
