The Mother Tongues Of Modernity: Modernism, Transnationalism, Translation, Roland K. Végső

The relation of modernism to immigrant literatures should not be conceived in terms of an opposition between universalistic and particularistic discourses. Rather, we should explore what can be called a modernist transnationalism based on a general universalist argument. Two examples of this transnationalism are explored side by side: Ezra Pound’s and Anzia Yezierska’s definitions of the aesthetic act in terms of translation. The readings show that the critical discourses of these two authors are structured by a belief in universalism while showing opposite possibilities, both generated by modernist transnationalism. Venezuelan Avant-Garde: María Calcaño's Erotic Poetry, Giovanna Montenegro

Comparative Literature Faculty and Student Scholarship

Abstract: This essay treats the Venezuelan avant-garde and its historical development through the poet María Calcaño (1906-1956). An analysis of Calcaño’s work reveals how her erotic avant-gardism was excluded from male-dominated avant-garde literary circles in Venezuela in the 1920s and the 1930s. Rather than analyzing the Latin- American avant-garde as a product of European vanguardisms, I show how Calcaño’s poetry draws upon women’s physical and erotic experience to generate a new female- authored avant-garde poetic corpus. Calcaño therefore produces work that illustrates the poetic expression of women’s identity in Venezuela. She is the first poet who breaks with poetic forms …

This essay is a study of the cultural manifestation of youth in the early years of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It does not aim to examine the focus on youth merely as a social phenomenon, but instead considers youth as a symbolic figure that had a profound influence on the conceptions of nationhood and modernity. Focusing on Mao's discourse on youth and its effects on literature and politics, I argue that youth is a discursive constellation that is constructed through endless choices, creations, and readjusting of symbols, images, and representational modes. Some readers may ask what it means to use the term "science" in conjunction with Shakespeare. From a modern perspective, science may not seem to be able to tell us much about Shakespeare or Shakespeare about science. Looking backwards, it is fair to say that Aristotle would probably have agreed with such a perspective: what scholasticism came to call scientia has nothing to do with ars. In between Aristotle and Einstein, though, matters stood differently. It is no secret that the contemporary university values a model of efficiency, of tangible, quantifiable outcomes. Jan Currie and Lesley Vidovich (qtd. in Downing, Hurlbert, Mathieu 9) contend that since the 1980s, the boundaries between higher education, government, and business have largely deteriorated, and business discourse of "excellence" has come to dominate university culture. Consequently, output, outcomes, and efficiency are valorized over and above process, inquiry, and the inevitable tensions of learning. 香港是一個迅速發展的商業化海港城市，其耀人的經濟成就，曾是英國殖民者的驕傲。但殖民銃治者對香港的看重，主要是它作為「轉運港」經濟利益和政治上的戰略意義，對於文化和文學，除在大學推行英國體制外，基本上採取不干預的政策。游離於殖民者的文化秩序之外，超脫於家國政治爭鬥之上，冷戰時代的香港的文化與文學似乎有大陸與台灣所沒有的自由與超然性。李歐梵先生站在自由知識份子的視野，曾著文提出，香港夾在兩個政權之間，形成了一種政治上的邊緣空間：「在兩岸政府言論的控制之下，大陸和台灣不准談的，香港可以談；換言之，香港反而形成了一種可以在報章雜誌上論政的『公共空間』。」他認為這種邊緣性不僅使香港成了政治上的「飛地」，也使之具有了文化上混雜性和超越性：「它可以在幾種文化的邊緣——中國、美國、日本、印度——卻不受其中的宰制，甚至可以『不按理出牌』，從各種形式的拼湊中創出異彩。」

李歐梵先生的觀點富有真知灼見，對研究九七「回歸」之前的香港文學很有啟發。但「三不管」的邊緣實際上也是各種政治勢力角力的場所；而文化的混雜性，一方面有助於通過「國際視野」克服自己的封閉性，但另一方面也可能受時尚和市場的牽引，影響文化探索的重心和持續性。本文試圖通過冷戰時代香港文學的複雜性，探討其在現代中文文學格局中的特點、位置和問題。

Complications seem inevitably to arise whenever one tries to define either regionalism in general or any specific region like the South or the Great Plains or to categorize the art and artifacts that come from or relate to that area by means of such language. Commentators occasionally try to take the easy way out of these taxonomic difficulties by simply declaring that “writing is writing,” by which reductive expression they apparently mean that all writing is “universal” in nature (the local manifestation of some “universal language”) and that, therefore, all that varies from “region” to “region” is the inflection.
