Although the Isthmus of Panama was to become, and is today, the principal point of passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, considerable interest has been aroused periodically by the potential of a route in Nicaragua. The focal points of interest in Nicaragua have been the San Juan River and the Lake of Nicaragua which create a natural water passage for all but twelve of the 194 miles between Atlantic and Pacific.
