Vulnerable, Yet Resilient: The Impact Of Covid-19 On Latino-Owned Businesses In South Omaha, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Marissa Cuellar

Latino/Latin American Studies Reports

The effects of COVID-19 have been felt broadly, across Omaha’s Latino community. Latino-owned businesses are a group of particular relevance due to the importance that local business, economic development, employment, and wealth creation have on the community as a whole. Using survey data collected between September 2021 and January 2022 among Latino business owners in South Omaha, the current study seeks to provide an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the impact of the pandemic on this group. The survey was applied to a non-random convenience sampling of 121 Latino business owners. Thus, there is no intention for this survey to …

Memories Of Exile And Temporary Return: Chilean Exiles Remember Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco Sep 2020

Memories Of Exile And Temporary Return: Chilean Exiles Remember Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The exile after the military coup of 1973 has been the largest emigration flow in Chilean history. Using oral histories of Chilean exiles collected in the Midwest of the United States as evidence, I describe and analyze their memories of Chile during President Allende’s government and compare them with their memories of recent visits to Chile. I argue that in order to begin recuperating the memory of exile we need to understand the complex relations between the process of exile, the memories of the country of origin, and the nation-state. I conclude this article by proposing that memory not only …

The Paradoxes Of Informalizing Street Trade In The Latin American City, Lissette Aliaga-Linares

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to challenge the default portrayal of street trade as an informal occupation and spatial practice, by examining comparatively the changes in the regulatory frameworks of two politically distinct city administrations in Latin America since the introduction of the informal economy debate.

Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws from a comparative case study design to synthesize evidence from historical administrative records, secondary research and materials from a two-year fieldwork carried out in Lima and Bogotá in 2008 and 2009.

Findings – The author argues that the incorporation of the informal economy framework into local …

Reporting On Art In The City: Newspaper Coverage Of Public Art In Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, And Chicago, 2001 – 2010, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Toby A. Ten Eyck

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

Local journalism is expected to record significant events, people, and ideas tied to the location where the journalism is practiced. Public art commemorates some of these significant events, people, and ideas, some of which encapsulate the style of the city, and all of which can become issues that gain media attention. We investigate a decade (2001–2010) of newspaper reporting and policies related to public art in four cities that are considered cultural destinations in the United States—Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Chicago—to understand how this issue is used to define and describe each of these cities and styles within …

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

A report released by the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) shows that while the number of Latino-owned businesses in Nebraska are growing, they are also the least likely to survive or expand.

According to the report, which utilizes data from the public use microdata sample compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2007, while the 3,063 Latino-owned businesses make up just 1.9 percent of businesses in Nebraska, those same businesses have come to represent the largest share of minority-owned firms in the state at 53 percent, which is nearly double the number that …

Un Retrato Demográfico De La Población De Origen Mexicano En Nebraska, Lissette Aliaga-Linares

Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan Mar 2014

Migration Policy And Development In Chile, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Brendan Mullan

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

Current and prospective migration law and policy in Chile does not adequately incorporate the causes, content, and consequences of international migration to and from Chile. We describe and examine migration in‐flows, out‐flows, migration‐related policies, and how those policies drive, and are driven by, notions of development in Chile. We explore contradictions in Chilean nascent migration policy currently under legislative review. We argue that it is imperative that migration, migration policy, and their relationship to development be discussed inclusively and transparently and be explicitly incorporated into the Chilean government's nascent migration and development legal policies and frameworks.

Latino Businesses In Nebraska: A Preliminary Look, Lissette Aliaga-Linares

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

Data for this report comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners Public Use Microdata Sample (SBO PUMS) as well as published tables based on the full survey. The most recent release of the Survey of Business Owners is based on data collected in 2007. The data only allows for an imperfect portrayal of the current conditions of Latino businesses in the state. However, the analyses of such data, as presented in this report, constitute an important baseline from which to continue to monitor the growth and conditions of these businesses. The next SBO-PUMS will be released in …

Criollismo Femenino Y Mestizaje En Mah Rap De Malín D’Echevers, Claudia García

Foreign Languages and Literature Faculty Publications

The Chilean State And The Search For A New Migration Policy, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Amanda Levinson Nov 2012

The Chilean State And The Search For A New Migration Policy, Cristián Doña-Reveco, Amanda Levinson

The Unintended Consequences Of Exile: The Brazilian And Chilean Cases In Comparative Perspective, 1964 – 1990, Cristián Doña-Reveco

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Publications

The right to asylum is a central theme in South American political identity. What originated as a way of protecting political leaders in the period of anarchy that followed the independence of these nations became, in the 1940s, a cornerstone of the inter-American political and legal systems. For the first century and a half of national independence in South American countries, the right to asylum was an elite status that guaranteed protection to political leaders deposed by political unrest or fearful of political retribution. These political elites usually sought asylum in neighboring countries: far enough from home for safety, but …

Parents completed a questionnaire that assessed Latino and White American cultural orientations, importance of children's academic and social success, and self- and significant other involvement in children's education. Results indicated that Latino (and other ethnic minority) parents valued academic and social success equally and more strongly than did Whites and that Whites valued social success more …

Arriarán’s book is comprised of speeches, talks, fragments of journal articles, scholarly presentations and one short story written by Chilean politicians and academics for audiences in the United States. The main objective of this book is to introduce Chile to the broader U.S. public. The objective, however, is not to present Chile’s geography or landscapes or culture, but to establish Chile as a country that thinks globally and that participates interdependently in the world. The Chile that is presented here by the different ‘voices’ is the country of global policies and politics--a country that is in constant conversation with its …

Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz

The last decade has seen a significant growth of the Latino population in the Midwest, particularly in rural communities. We discuss the forces that have stimulated the growth of the Latino population in the region. We use data from the Current Population Surveys (1988-1997) to assess the demographic and employment growth of the Latino population in the Midwest. Because of the limitations of secondary data, we also illustrate the growth of the Latino population with evidence from Nebraska and a selected area of the state. Data analysis suggests that population estimates of the Latino population generated by the US Bureau …
