Owen Clinic Institute in Huntington, West Virginia was a mental health facility operated by Dr. Stemmerman and Dr. Thelma V. Owen. Collection contains 14 volumes of `Longview,' a newsletter written by patients 1948-1962. Three scrapbooks relate to the West Virginia Mental Health Association and its efforts to improve care for mental health patients in the state.

This collection of Revella E. Hughes papers consists of photo reproductions of the pages of her press book pertaining to her career in New York and on tour. Original pressbook located in the Moorland-Springarn Research Center, Howard University. Later accession includes holograph arrangements for the organ; research papers written while a graduate student at Northwestern University, where Dr. Hughes earned a Masters of Music degree in 1942. Papers consist primarily of diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, genealogies and photographs of five families: the Glanville-Carter families of St. Louis, Mo.; the Whittakers of Preble County, Ohio; Dorothy Whittaker Atkins of Huntington, West Virginia.; and the Heacocks of Bucks County, Penna.

A significant part of the collection are the diaries of Annie Heacock, a teacher at the Penn School for freed slaves in Beaufort, South Carolina, 1864-1869. Other diaries include the Civil War diary of John Whittaker, a surgeon in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

The Nancy Murray Mann papers consist of correspondences, speeches in various paper formats, newspaper clippings, government publications, photographs, copies of Mann’s passport, land deeds, and research notes from Ben Riley, a Marshall University graduate student from 1983-1985. The focus of the collection primarily covers Mann’s political and social activities, particularly her political involvement during the 1928 presidential campaign for Herbert Hoover and her subsequent work during his administration. This collection consists of one volume entitled, “All About Going Abroad: With Maps and A Handy Travel Diary” by Harry A. Franck, 1927. The front leaf indicates that the book was presented from Jennie to Minnie in honor of their trip abroad documented in the volume. The volume contains a diary section that is filled with entries ranging in date from June 22 to July 29, 1929. The entries cover western Europe and document what the Emmons did during their time abroad, as well as some historical background on the places where they traveled.

This collection consists of scanned copies of clippings, a book, two scrapbooks primarily about Irene Drukker Broh and her mother Sara Tobias Broh. Included are one scrapbook each by Irene and Sara, each consisting primarily of clippings about social issues and other ephemera. Also included in the collection is a significant number of clippings about Irene throughout her life, a term paper written about Irene’s activist work, and a copy of “A Literary Find” by Sara Tobias Drukker, composed of a posthumous publication of Drukker’s work. As all items in the collections are scanned, legibility varies.

Given the collection’s small size, the decision was made to keep the collection’s original order as found and not divide into series. Broader thematic content of the collection includes state level financial and treasurer’s papers organizing the conference as well as financial documents submitted to receive reimbursement from the IWY grant funds appropriated by Congress. Additional state materials include correspondence to and from the Treasurer for WV IWY, Betsy McCreight, publicity materials and brochures, reports, and financial material related to delegates attending the national conference.

Box 3 includes materials for the national IWY Conference, including manuals, publicity materials, and publications.

The Campbell-Staats collection consists of two separate series of information. The first series is comprised of the Jennie Ratliff Campbell papers. These papers consist mainly of personal correspondence to Miss Ratliff dating from 1875-1888. The majority of these letter were from two particular individuals, R. G. Drysdale and W. S. Livengood, and concerned everyday occurrence and mutual acquaintances. The remainder of the series is made up of samples from her schoolwork, songs she had copied, business correspondence, and a book of poetry given to her by her fiancee, C. W. Campbell.
