Finding only for Manuscripts Small Collection 1722. Diary kept 10 December 1860 to 8 September 1862 by Johanna "Josie" Louisa Underwood, eldest daughter of a prominent pro-Union family in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She vividly records her thoughts and activities about Bowling Green's occupation by Confederate troops, the harassment of her family, strained friendships, and the destruction of her home. The diary was edited by Nancy Disher Baird and published as Josie Underwood’s Civil War Diary (University Press of Kentucky, 2009).

The nineteenth century was an age of travel. The English traveled the globe for a variety of reasons. When not traveling for military, political, religious, or scientific reasons, they also traveled a great deal simply for pleasure. Regardless of reason, travel brought the English into contact with the Other. As a construction, the Other became an important part of English identity.

Englishwomen were particularly famous for travel. Although they were disenfranchised Others themselves in English society, Englishwomen did not identify with the Other they encountered in travels, but rather chose enfranchisement in an elite "imagined" England. This community (or the …

An Army Of Housewives: Women’S Wartime Columns In Two Mainstream Israeli Newspapers, Shira Klein

At the height of Israel's 1948 war, women's columns in the newspapers Ha'aretz and Ma‘ariv offered readers advice, stories, and letters. They focused on domestic practices such as preparing food, sewing clothes, dressing fashionably and providing comfort. At first glance, they completely ignored the war raging around them. However, this essay shows that the columnists portrayed housewives' roles, no less than men's front-line fighting, as an important part of the nation's wartime effort. Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of one scrapbook entitled containing photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia collected by Elizabeth Francis (later Agee) during and after her time at Marshall. Materials in the scrapbook include an autograph and note section, dance cards, sorority correspondence and invitations, student government materials, a student directory, event programs, photographs of Francis at Marshall and, later, family photographs, a gradebook for an 8th grade course taught by Francis, and other mixed materials such as handkerchiefs and calling cards. Also included in the scrapbook are slips of paper identifying subjects or items written by Susan Riggs, Agee’s daughter.

Indiana Frontier Women And Gender Relations: Applying A Different Framework, Jennifer Nicole Roman

Throughout the 1830s Indiana remained a state composed primarily of frontier communities. By 1860 commercialization had begun to take hold in Indiana. Analyzing women who lived in Indiana from 1800 to 1860 offers a unique insight into how women interacted in public and the marketplace in Indiana's frontier regions and how commercialization altered those interactions. Frontier life often blurred the lines between women's public and private lives. The family farm both provided for the family's needs and produced goods for the market. Indiana women participated in public life through the church and through their jobs as midwives, textile producers, teachers, …
