Transcription of an interview with Mary Brant (Benton) Fitts conducted by Karen Owen for an oral history project titled "A Generation Remembers, 1900-1949." Fitts discusses her life and times, including information about growing up in Utica and Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, her children, social life and customs, race relations, World War II, and sundry other topics. Mrs. Fitts was a housewife and mother of two.

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Frances E. Willard's Southern Tours For Temperance: 1881-1883, Charles Jeffrey Shelton

History Theses & Dissertations

Frances E. Willard (1839-98) was the president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 until her death and one of the foremost temperance advocates of her time. This study explores the impact of Willard's first three tours of the South on that region's temperance movement and southern women, as well as on inter-sectional reconciliation after Reconstruction. The study concludes that Willard's efforts to organize W.C.T.U. chapters in the South were largely successful. Willard and her southern collaborators contributed greatly to a resurgence of the southern temperance movement and the involvement of southern women in community activities, but temperance advocacy …
