At the end of the sixteenth century, when the Portuguese came into possession of the south-western sea-board, Madampe proper, was a sizeable village inhabited by about a hundred families. Though situated some forty miles to the north of Colombo, the centre of Portuguese power and activity, Madampe was in some respects well located being within seven miles of the important port of Chilaw and within three miles of the sea, over which the Portuguese still had undisputed control. The village moreover, had twenty two minor villages attached to it, the whole forming the gabadagama or royal demesne of Madampe, an …

On January 21, 1834 Thaddeus Stevens, a freshman member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from Adams County, rose in that body to speak in favor of a bill appropriating a sum of money to the new college at Gettysburg in whose fortunes he had become deeply interested. After answering the arguments of his colleague from Adams County, who had just spoken against the bill, Stevens undertook to explain in a few words the predicament in which the fledgling college found itself: It has been chartered two years ; and organized about eighteen months. Leland Elhard is an Associate Professor of pastoral theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio (ALC). He spent four weeks this past summer observing, visiting, and working with the people of the Lutheran churches in the near east side of Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored by the Mutual Enrichment Program of LHRAA. The new and interesting possibilities which emerged from his experience are, it seems to us, worthy of priority consideration by other churches. We are sharing some of his thoughts and insights here. The Octofoil
The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.
