Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 100. Correspondence of the Harris family of Simpson County, Kentucky. Consists chiefly of World War I letters sent from two brothers, George DeWitt Harris and Downey L. Harris, to their parents, George Calvin Harris and Amanda J. Harris, of Franklin, Kentucky. George DeWitt Harris was injured in World War I and died at Epionville, France on 7 October 1918.

This dissertation studies the impact of the Great War on Toronto, Ontario. What happened in the city? How were the enormous sacrifices of the war rationalized? Why did English-Canadians support it? What did citizens know about the war? The dissertation draws upon a wide and varied source base. Every issue of the following newspapers was examined: the six Toronto daily papers, The Weekly Sun, Maclean's, The Industrial Banner, Everywoman's World, The Labour Gazette, and the religious periodicals of major religious denominations in the city. On the eve of the American Civil War one of the most prominent politicians and businessmen in western Virginia was Judge William Lowther Jackson of Parkersburg, Wood County. Jackson, a native of Harrison County and a member of one of the wealthiest and most politically powerful dans in northwestern Virginia, represented his region In the Virginia Assembly for three consecutive terms in the 1850s. He served as Second Auditor for the State of Virginia and directed the Virginia Literary Fund for public education.
