When the Korean War began in June 1950, the South Korean Army was unprepared and was unable to cope with the forces from the North. This study seeks to determine whether the decisions made by the US Army as to the building of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army during the period from 1945 to 1950 were appropriate in regard to the political and strategic situation in the Korean peninsula. The study approaches the problem by examining us documents and other archival material concerning the Army's policies toward Korea, how these policies were developed and executed, and what effect they …

This thesis presents an intensive study of the nature and scope of the Selective Service System in an effort to analyze the system that became the focal point of growing discontent with the Vietnam War. The primary objective is to determine whether the Selective Service System equitably executed its congressionally mandated objective of raising military manpower. In order to ascertain whether the System operated with balance and fairness, its structure and procedures are examined. The study of the Selective Service System's structure 'necessitated an analysis of the characteristics and backgrounds of both administrators and those who met the System's quotas …

General John Henry Winder enforced martial law in the Confederate capital in Richmond from the winter of 1862 .to the spring of 1864. Winder's Richmond was plagued with lawlessness, disloyalty, and espionage. He was an experienced and capable commander who enforced his summary orders diligently. But Winder's regime only succeeded in managing the city for brief periods. The complex problems he confronted probably were insurmountable; by the end of his administration Richmond remained in turmoil. Several factors were responsible for this: numerous people were willing to risk prison to participate in the lucrative liquor trade, the basis for much of …

This typescript was on deposit at the library of the Daughters of the American Revolution where it was copied. The typescript discusses issues with war records about John Lewis, for which there are several who served during the Revolutionary War.

This collection consists of copies of Civil War orders written to Captain Samuel Rothgeb sending supplies and orders for troop movements. Also included is a copy of an 1862 letter to “Friend Rothgeb” from R. L. Stewart regarding a steamboat shipment. Also included are copies of envelopes, a pay stub/check, an Army 50 cent note, and promotion form for Thomas A. Mau(l?)sly to the rank of Colonel in the 18th Regiment of West Virginia Militia.

Given that all collection items are copies, legibility can be limited but is overall high.

This collection predominately consists of a Civil War diary by James Potts. Legibility of the copy of the diary is limited given that it is a xeroxed black and white copy.

The cover of the diary says, “Romance of the War by James N. Potts [illegible] Commissary [illegible] Book Commencing Dec. 12th, 1861 Hunter’sville, Va, Pocahontas Co., Virginia”. The first thirty-one pages consist of a ledger tracking provisions for 1861-1862. This collection is composed of letters and postcards to Lillian from her brothers Donald and Darrell while they served and trained for WWI. Included in the collection are Lillian’s personal papers during her high school and early college years, such as programs, yearbooks, student publications, and grade reports. Also included are collected publications, clippings, and ephemera related to her brothers’ service in WWI.

It is uncertain how the folder of Clendenning letters written during WWI were added to the collection, but they are from Robert Clendenning (serving in the war) to his father on the home front.

The collection consists primarily of two groups of letters. The first group were written by Arminda Holiday Clendenning of Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio, to her sister Ann Holliday Winder of Iowa, from 1850 until 1867. She writes of local and family news, life in the country, and later, as a young married woman, of her family and her husband’s business. Several letters mention travels and migrations of family and friends to the West.

The subject of this paper is the development of govern­mental policies toward the freedmen especially labor policies and the establishment of schools and relief programs for the freedmen in the tidewater area of Virginia during the Civil War. The first extensive school system for the freedmen was launched in this area, and it was in this area in November, 1863 that General Benjamin F. Butler created a central authority for the administration of Freedmen's Affairs.
