Kazakh Nationalism In The Gorbachev Era, Steven O'Neal Sabol

The primary purpose of this study is to survey specific manifestations of Kazakh nationalism in the Gorbachev era and ask what provoked a seemingly cooperative people to exert their nationalist sentiment. The two principal forms examined are the passage of the Kazakh Language Law in 1989, and the emergence of informal groups and alternative political parties in Kazakhstan.

The nationalism that was expressed by Kazakhs in the Gorbachev era was a resumption of the nationalism that was suspended or suppressed during seventy years of Soviet rule. The December 1986 demonstration in Alma-Ata irreparably altered ethnic relations in the republic and …

This thesis explores the images of the Chinese Communists which were held by career Foreign Service Officers in China, non-career diplomats in China and the decision-making elite in Washington during the period of time from 1945 to 1950. The study centers on the questions of the tractability of the Chinese Communists to negotiations and the connection of the Chinese Communists to the Soviets. The study uses several propositions of social psychology to explain the differing images and the resulting effect on Sino-American relations.

This thesis is an examination of the role of American policy makers in the transformation of Japan from a defeated, disarmed enemy to a Cold War ally on the path to rearmament during the Allied Occupation (1945-1952). The original Occupation goals of disarmament and demilitarization for Japan were embodied in Article IX of the American-sponsored Japanese Constitution of 1947. These goals were unilaterally discarded. 'by American policy makers as the Cold War developed and U,S. security policy in Asia dictated that Japan be rehabilitated as an ally. The thesis traces the development of the Marshall mission from its inception in late 1945 to its failure in late 1946. Concentrating on Chinese internal affairs, the thesis examines the reaction of the Nationalists and Communists to mediation, and reveals the sources of failure of American policy. The concluding chapter views American China policy within the context of the civil war and suggests that the mission was incapable of altering the historical processes of the Chinese revolution.

This thesis contends from the time of September 1940 to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States and Japan offered each no workable concessions that might have deterred war. A stalemate was finally established between the two countries. The position of the Japanese nation was to expand and control "Greater East-Asia," while the position the United States held was one that claimed all nations should uphold certain basic principles of democracy, that all nations should honor the sanctity of treaties," and that they should treat neighboring countries in a friendly fashion.

Process And Policy In The Development And Resolution Of The 1929 Sino-Soviet Conflict An Examination Of The Effects Of Process In International Conflict Upon The Implementation Of National Policy, Frederic F. Wolfer Jr.

This study of the 1929 Sin-Soviet conflict over the Chinese Eastern Railway represents an expanded narrative of the conflict in relation to four major processes which guided its development and resolution: (1) Chinese "rights recovery" policy, (2) the effects of Chinese internal politics, (3) differing perceptions of the reasons for and legitimacy of the conflict, and (4) the effects of international mediation and conciliation efforts.

Interpretation of the significance of the conflict is offered, along with explanatory appendices and suggestions for analytical approaches.

The essential objective of this study was to reveal the degree to which one man, Nicholas Muraviev, was instrumental in bringing about Russia's annexation of The Amur basin, as well as the territory that became the Maritime Province of Siberia. Introductory chapters provide: a) a background summary of Muraviev's education and of his career prior to his service in Siberia and b) a brief historical survey of the area in which his achievements raised Russia to the position of a Far Eastern Power. At the end of the sixteenth century, when the Portuguese came into possession of the south-western sea-board, Madampe proper, was a sizeable village inhabited by about a hundred families. Though situated some forty miles to the north of Colombo, the centre of Portuguese power and activity, Madampe was in some respects well located being within seven miles of the important port of Chilaw and within three miles of the sea, over which the Portuguese still had undisputed control.
