Orlando Magic, Richard C. Crepeau May 1999

Orlando Magic, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week has been a difficult one for Orlando Magic fans. After going through a short season in reasonably good style the Magic went out of the playoffs in short shrift. This was not only a sign that the Magic have major problems they must face in the weeks ahead, but it also was one of many indications that in the post-Michael NBA major changes are taking place.

In Memoriam Joe Dimaggio, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I met a man today who claims he once saw Joe DiMaggio drop a fly ball. In a game. I didn't know whether to believe him or not. Then he told me that Joe hit a 10th inning home run to win the game. This gave the story a modicum of credibility. Yes, I suppose it could have happened.

John Elway, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have a friend who was at Stanford at the same time as John Elway. He too was an athlete but not in one of the high profile money sports. Over the years he has come to detest John Elway especially the Denver quarterback's success. My friend claims that with every million dollars and every big game victory, Elway is making him look bad. My friend is yet to win a big game or make a million, although he continues to have hope for the lottery.

Columbine And Jock Culture, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If you are like me you are already weary, or just wary, of the endless analysis of the Colorado high school shootout that have blanketed the media over the past few days. The cable news networks seem to have found something worthy of their attention now that they no longer have Bill and Monica, and have become bored with the video game war in Serbia.

A Tribute To Wayne Gretsky, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Wayne Gretzky’s retirement marks the end of the career of one of the greatest sports stars of the century and the greatest hockey player of all time. A list of his achievements is mind boggling: Nine Hart Trophies as regular season MVP all in the 1980s; Two Conn Symthe Trophies as MVP in the Stanley Cup Playoffs; Five times the winner of Lester Pearson Award given to the outstanding player as voted by the players; Four Time Lady Bing Trophy winner as most gentlemanly player. He is the owner of over sixty NHL career records including goals (894), assists (1962) …

Carlos And Smith, Black Protest, And The Black Athlete, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On of the most indelible images of sport in the Sixties was the picture of Tommy Smith and John Carlos standing on the victory podium with their black gloved fist salute during the playing of the American national anthem. That image returned to me this past week when ESPN presented a three-part series on the social role of the Black Athlete.

Celebrating the Portuguese Communities in America: A Cartographic Perspective (Exhibit Guide).

February 23, 1999 - May 8, 1999

Although numerous countries and individuals were involved in the exploration and mapping of the Americas, it was the Portuguese who set the stage during the fifteenth century for the ensuing discoveries in the New World. Portuguese-born and sponsored explorers played a significant role, especially in charting a route around the southern tip of South America; in exploring and exploiting the waters bordering the northeast coast of North America; and in exploring the Pacific Coast of North America.

ESPN is calling it their "blow out the budget coverage." FOX promises that this will be the biggest presentation ever with over seven hours of pre-game programming. A thirty-second advertising spot will cost a $1.6M which comes to a mere $53,333 per second and represents a 28% increase over last year's bargain rates.

Olympic Scandal, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 1999

Olympic Scandal, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What was being called the Salt Lake City Olympic Scandal and is now clearly the all-world Olympic Scandal is a shock to very few people. Rumors, newspaper articles, and books have all previously raised these issues including some of the more spectacular details. I have in the back of my mind the recollection of a charge that an Olympic official was given a heart transplant, perhaps for a relative, by world renowned heart surgeon Michael DeBakey.
