It has been a long two weeks away from the sports scene in the United States. It is really amazing how easily you can be cut off from it, and how unimportant it can seem from a distance of several thousands of miles. Out in the Ural region of Russia there is little news of the NBA or NHL playoffs, and little awareness of the intensity of the American sports scene. However one university student did ask me if I was from the same Orlando where the Magic and Shaquille O'Neil played.

For a diversion last Friday night I headed off to Shea Stadium for the Mets' home opener with the Cardinals. It was a wild one with the Mets coming from behind to win 10-8. But it was even wilder among the fans. There has been a commercial running on the tube the past few months in which a young father is sitting at a Little League baseball game with a cellular telephone. After the kid comes to bat and gets a hit dad dials up mom and passes on the news. High tech has come to Little League baseball. There are nearly a half-dozen stories coming to focus over this past week that could be the subject of this week's commentary. Then Sunday morning came the news that Howard Cosell had died in New York during the night at age 77. He had been fighting a number of ailments over the past few years as he had faded from public view. The last significant public attention came a few months ago when he was given a richly deserved tribute at the ESPY awards.

After nearly eight months, some 232 days after it began, the strike by major league baseball players ended not at the bargaining table, but as the result of a judicial ruling by the youngest judge in the Southern District of New York. At age forty Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the first Puerto Rican appointed to the bench in this predominantly Puerto Rican district. This year it's the Road to Seattle. And as usual the Road goes through CBS television in New York because in 1989 CBS paid the NCAA $1B(or $143M per year) to guarantee their right to televise all-rounds of the NCAA tournament to the entire nation for seven years. That translated almost immediately into an increase of $30M in annual revenues for CBS, a bonanza of profits for the NCAA, and in 1990 $1.37M for each of the final four teams. Basketball's Final Four is the biggest money machine owned by the NCAA.

Was he the greatest ballplayer of all time? He thought so and told everyone who would and would not listen that he was. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb out-polled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought so, calling him "the greatest of all ballplayers-and an absolute shit." In the film "Cobb" starring Tommy Lee Jones the later part of Hemmingway's assessment of the Georgia Peach is illustrated better than the former.

Over the past two weeks two major sports figures of the Twentieth Century have died. On February 2, Fred Perry died in Melbourne, Australia at age 85, and ten days later on February 12, Nat Holman died in the Bronx at age 98. Both men made major contributions to their sports.

Church And State In The Early Fifteenth Century: Henry V'S Persecution Of The Lollards, Heather Lee Martin
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Henry V is often remembered for his battles in France and as the heroic figure portrayed in Shakespeare's plays. Yet the golden hero of English history began his reign faced with domestic, religious, and political challenges. Henry IV's usurpation of the crown ushered in the fifteenth century, and his son recognized that the support of the church could help ensure the stability of the Lancastrian reign. Domestic turbulence was exacerbated by the growing development of a fairly new phenomenon in England: heresy. In this paper, I will argue that Henry V chose to side with the church against the heretical …
