Tragic Tale Recounts First Murder On Uga Campus, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Nearly three-quarters of a century ago there was a double-slaying, a murder-suicide, in the second-oldest building still standing on the UGA campus. The killings sent ripples of horror through the Athens community. Although both victims were nonstudents visiting Athens, the double-slaying remains to this day the greatest tragedy involving a homicidal crime ever to occur on the UGA campus. The tragic incident has escaped mention in virtually every published history of Athens or the University of Georgia. Indeed, except for contemporary newspaper accounts, there does not appear to be anything in print giving an account of the double-killing.

The Harvard Economist John Kenneth Galbraith once observed that the rich are among the least understood social groups in America. Unlike the poor who are studied intensely, constantly surveyed by social workers and graduate students, the rich have gone largely uncharted. Last weekend was one of those wonderful sports weekends when quality, quantity and variety were available to the sports fan in Orlando. Within less than three days I had the good fortune to see the 1992 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, an excellent and competitive college basketball game on the UCF campus, and the NFL conference championships on television. It was a reminder to me that for all the nonsense and crassness on the contemporary sport scene, sport itself still is the thing.

The collection is divided into two series: Series I: Special Commission on Boundaries, Tacna-Arica Arbitration Papers and Series II: Morrow Family Personal Papers.

The first series pertains the 1922 request by Chile and Peru for the United States to arbitrate their land dispute over the provinces of Tacna, Arica, and Tarata. Jay Johnson Morrow was the chairman of the special commission arbitrating the boundary dispute between Chile and Peru from 1925 to 1929. Collection materials include historic maps and treaties, copies of geological surveys, field reports, annexation documents, and reports of arbitration meetings. This series includes materials in Spanish.
