The death of Marty Glickman last week brought back a number of memories. In and around the New York area people recalled Glickman as voice of the Knicks and any number of other teams on New York radio sports. Across the nation, and indeed perhaps even across the world, Glickman's death brought back memories of the 1936 Olympic Games and the horror of Hitler's final solution. The latter was without a doubt more significant as it affected sport as well as the course of world history.

The history of the island of Labuan can only be understood in its regional context. The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the history of Labuan Island for the period 1846-1963, emphasizing its development and expansion within the regional and colonial context. The central core of this thesis deal with trade. shipping, finance and port infrastructure. The recorded history of Labuan 1s a result of European activities in Southeast Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The primary factor was the need for security which is a prerequisite for trade. This past week Mike Mussina signed with the New York Yankees for $88.5M over six-year period with $12M of that a signing bonus to be spread over the contract at $2M per year. It might have been just one more of the endless stream of National Hockey League games that attract little attention before January. It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. A Yankee spokesman would not reveal the purchase price, believed to be in the ten or eleven figure range, but did say that Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner would spare no expense to ensure that the Yankees would remain competitive.
