This article is a brief history and synopsis of the Monroe Fordham Regional History Center at SUNY Buffalo State. The center opened in 2002, but much of the collection is from the projects of Dr. Monroe Fordham over the course of his career.

From Company Town To Company Town: Holden And Holden Village, Washington, 1937-1980 & Today, Mattias Olshausen

In 1937, Howe Sound Company built the town of Holden, Washington, to support its copper-mining operation at Copper Peak, located in the North Cascade Mountains, approximately 10 miles west of Lake Chelan. The operation produced concentrate from 1937 to 1957, during which time the town was home to a lively community featuring many families, a variety of organized recreational activities, and a public school. It was a company town, in which most property, business, organized activity, and public utilities and services were either directly or indirectly controlled by Howe Sound. Music has always been an inextricable component of Jewish culture from its beginnings. Even before the construction of the Temple, music was used for worship, feasts, festivals, and various other cultural activities. Since much of this music involves the singing of texts, poetry was also a central part of the Jewish music culture. Singing in ancient Israel often involved instrumental accompaniment. The Bible records the texts of much musical activity. Instrumental music, vocal music, and accompanied vocal music are found throughout the Bible. This thesis explores the incident of the Vel d'Hiv Roundup in Paris in July of 1942. It was the largest roundup of Jews in France during WWII, and remains a topic that is still very taboo, but due to books like "Sarah's Key" and rising interest, other nation's roles in the Holocaust are being explored. The author drawing upon three focuses of study-- majors in History, Religious & Theological Studies, and a French minor-- attempts to show how the Holocaust impacted a nation who's national motto is "Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood."

The focus of this study is an examination of the use of religion in Roman statecraft during the time of the Republic. Traditionally, scholars have viewed religion as a tool used by the aristocratic class to control the wills and actions of the general populace. This study examines five case studies which serve as counter-examples to this traditional notion and suggest that there existed in the aristocratic class a large number of individuals who genuinely subscribed to traditional Roman religious ideals.

The methodology used to conduct this study focuses primarily on careful exegesis of primary source material. More modern scholarship …

At the height of Israel's 1948 war, women's columns in the newspapers Ha'aretz and Ma‘ariv offered readers advice, stories, and letters. They focused on domestic practices such as preparing food, sewing clothes, dressing fashionably and providing comfort. At first glance, they completely ignored the war raging around them. However, this essay shows that the columnists portrayed housewives' roles, no less than men's front-line fighting, as an important part of the nation's wartime effort. The columnists and their responding readers took the housewives' domestic practices, which made them seem so unfit for battle and turned them into a battlefield of their …

After the 1980 presidential election, the New Christian Right (NCR) became a political force that could no longer be ignored. Since the early 1980s the political agenda of the NCR has expanded beyond culture war issues. Currently the NCR addresses several international issues such as, human trafficking, the spread of HIV, and religious persecution. Since the NCR is one of many political forces that presently influences policy makers, it’s become crucial for the public to possess a good understanding of what the NCR is, and grasp what lies behind its intersecting religious dynamics.

In the United States the history of John Nelson Darby's dispensational premillennialism is intimately tied up with the history of fundamentalism. It is difficult to talk about dispensational premillennialism in the believers church tradition in the twentieth century without making some reference to the fundamentalist movement. In fact, the two distinguishing marks of fundamentalist theology have been the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and the eschatological schema known as dispensationalism. It is thus rather surprising that historians have de-emphasized dispensational premillennialism in explaining the history of fundamentalism. I think that this is a mistake. Japanese Evacuation From The West Coast: Final Report, John L. Dewitt

A 1943 U.S. government report detailing the enforced internment of west-coast Japanese-Americans during World War II. The Japanese internment began in February, 1942, two months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Executive Order 9066 signed by President Roosevelt forcibly committed innocent Japanese-Americans to isolated internment camps in rural California, Utah and other midwestern states. Conditions were inadequate, overcrowding and unsanitary also lacking education and medical care. In 1945 the Supreme Court declared the internments illegal. A final report submitted by General J.L. DeWitt in April, 1942 utilized maps, photographs and other visuals to justify the internments. The report was …
