The National Football League is heading into its fourth week and I haven't mentioned it yet. This is because Pete Roselle is no longer the Commissioner, and as a result the League has lost some of its majesty. Roselle always had the appearance and bearing of a deity, and this radiated to the League itself. With Pete gone, the NFL looks like just another bunch of mortals making big bucks off the boredom of the populace and the sweat of gladiators. The piety is no longer there.

The vote was 27-1 with only the Texas Rangers against the proposal. And so next season, if the players agree, there will be three divisions in each league in baseball. Realignment will have been achieved, and there will be another round of playoffs. Player approval is likely, as it was the Player's Association who suggested that it was time for realignment, rather than a second tier of playoffs involving second place teams.

Last Saturday you could hear the chant that goes with the tomahawk chop on two networks, and if you were quick with the remote control you could even get them into sequence. The Atlanta Braves were on CBS, while over on ABC the Florida State Seminoles were putting on a clinic for Kansas to open the college football season. The President of Florida State University, Dr. Dale Lick resigned last week after controversy surrounding his candidacy for the presidency of Michigan State University. That controversy stemmed from comments he had once made concerning the Black Athlete, in which he said that Black athletes were naturally superior to whites, as they were able to jump higher than whites, citing the evidence of basketball performance to demonstrate his point.

In addition to Reggie Jackson's entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame last weekend, the National Football League Hall of Fame had its induction ceremonies at Canton, Ohio, on Saturday. For those not intimately involved with college athletics this is the hot topic currently rattling across campuses nationwide. Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

Just over a week ago Dick Schultz resigned as the Executive Director of the NCAA, a position he has held since 1987. Schultz has been called a leader in the reform of Intercollegiate Athletics and has changed the public image of the NCAA. His resignation was prompted by the fact that the NCAA had found rules violations in the University of Virginia athletic program during the Dick Schultz years as Athletic Director there. Virginia has been placed on two years probation.

Normally the Catholic Church requires a certain passage of time, as well as evidence of the performance of three miracles, before anyone is presented for canonization to sainthood. Apparently ESPN's standards are not quite that high, as the network canonized Jim Valvano last week following his death. Although Valvano had at least one miracle to his credit, the winning of the 1983 NCAA basketball championship with the miracle shot against Houston as time ran out, it still seems unlikely that he is the stuff out of which saints are made.

Over a year and one-half ago a classic American drama unfolded in Channelview, Texas, where Wanda Holloway, 37, was tried for attempted murder. The charge was that Wanda tried to hire a hit man to kill Verna Heath whose daughter Amber was pushing Shanna Holloway, Wanda's little girl, to defeat in the school cheerleading competition. This was a story that touched the hearts of all Americans.

Michael Eisner, the latest gentleman sportsman of our time, announced this week that the new Disney entry in the National Hockey League would be named after a film, and be called "The Mighty Ducks" of Anaheim. They will play in a facility called The Pond. And so with one sweep of his sleazy pen Eisner has degraded hockey and infringed on a fifty-year-old baseball cliche. This past weekend in one of those nameless faceless tennis tournaments that no one pays much attention to, Martina Navratilova made tennis history by becoming the oldest player to ever defeat a number one ranked player. At age 36 years, 3 months and 29 days, Martina beat the 19 year old Monica Seles in three sets, winning a third set tie breaker. This match ended Seles' winning streak at 34 matches.

A week ago the National Football League and the NFL Players Association reached an agreement on a new seven year contract, marking the end of a labor dispute that goes back to the twenty four day strike of 1987. The settlement was reached three weeks after an apparent agreement had broken down, and four months after a federal jury in Minneapolis had ruled Plan-B free agency to be in violation of anti-trust laws. Following that decision Judge David Doty urged both parties to arrive at a settlement of their dispute, telling them that he would impose a settlement if necessary.
