This annotated bibliography has been created as part of the Launching through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City project. Kathleen Spring, Brenda DeVore Marshall, Andrea Snyder, Mary Beth Jones, Alicia Schnell, and Gabrielle Leif have contributed to the document. Many of the articles and other documents were found in personal scrapbooks and files. In many cases, the bibliographic information is incomplete. Research is ongoing, and the bibliography will be updated as additional information becomes available.

This document was developed to guide members of the research team as they prepared transcripts of audio and video stories that were collected as part of the Launching through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City project. The document includes information on general formatting conventions, stylistic issues, and examples for reference.

Panel one serves as the title panel of the traveling exhibit. It was adapted from the cover designed by Candido Salinas for the Fall 2012 issue of the Linfield Magazine. The panel features a vintage photograph from the Coon Family Collection depicting double-enders launching from the beach in 1957.

Exhibit panel 8 continues the exploration of modifications made to the designs of the Pacific City dories. It includes information about boat trailers and other methods used to transport the dories to the beach for launching.

Panel 7 in the exhibit traces the evolution of the Pacific City dory from the early double-enders that plied the Nestucca River to the first square-stern dories that joined the fleet in the 1960s. The panel showcases vintage photographs and newspaper clippings from the collections of dory fishers interviewed for the project.

Dory Days, the successor to the Dory Derby, provides the focus for panel 6. Through historical and contemporary images obtained from the interviewees and created as part of the project, the panel highlights the uniqueness of this annual and much-loved celebration of the village of Pacific City and its dories.

The third and final panel dedicated to the general history of the Dory Fleet, panel 4 details events from 1994 to 2014. It presents information about the ongoing challenges faced by the dory fishers. It also includes a Notes and References section for the three historical highlights panels.

Panel 5 provides a glimpse into the days of the dory derbies when the dorymen thrilled crowds, often numbering in the thousands, with their dory races and other fishing-related competitions and activities. The panel features vintage photographs and newspaper articles from the collections of dory fishers interviewed for the project.

Panel three, the second of three panels in the exhibit focused on the general history of the Dory Fleet, chronicles events from the 1940s to the 1990s. These include information about changes in the design of dories, the amount of salmon caught during the “heyday” of commercial fishing, and the increased regulation of the fishing industry.

The first of three panels in the exhibit that provide general historical highlights about the Dory Fleet, panel two features a timeline of events from 1855 to 1935. It incorporates a section from the Oregon House Calendar of 1927, chronicling the introduction and passage of House Bill 282. This legislation closed the Nestucca River to commercial fishing. The panel also includes an excerpt from the 1927 version of the Oregon Voters’ Pamphlet that describes an initiative to overturn the legislative action.

Exhibit panel 20 includes the names of supporters of the project. It also features vintage photographs from the Paul Hanneman, Terry and Jan Learned, Sid Fisher, and Coon Family collections.

Panel 19 features information about the digital archives created to preserve the history of the Pacific City Dory Fleet. It also documents some of the creative and scholarly work associated with the project done by Linfield students and faculty. It is the third of three exhibit panels that chronicle the Launching through the Surf project.

Panel 18 depicts the development of the production of Kickin’ Sand and Tellin’ Lies, a play based on the oral histories collected during the project. The play was performed in November 2012 at the Marshall Theatre on the Linfield College campus in McMinnville and at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City. It is the second of three exhibit panels that chronicle the Launching through the Surf project.
