The Battle of Beersheba, fought on October 31, 1917, was a vital turning point in the British campaign against the Ottoman Turks. The battle opened a gap in the Turkish line that eventually resulted in the British takeover of Palestine. The British command saw the cavalry charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade as a new tactical opportunity, and this factored into the initiative for new light tank forces designed around the concepts of mobility and flanking movements. Order contains reports of the troops under the command of Brigadier General Eleazer Arthur Paine that had recently marched to Milburn, Kentucky. They are described as a “mere armed mob” and reprimanded for looting. Includes data about Smith.

World War II correspondence, chiefly written by Howard Smith to his family in Hart and Larue counties in Kentucky. Smith was a munitions carrier in Company C, 133rd Infantry Division. Also contains letters from friends and family, and information about his death in Italy in 1944 and his reburial in Smith Cemetery (Priceville, Kentucky) in 1949.

His regiment was stationed in southeastern Kentucky, then Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He describes his company’s activities in preparation for the Battle of Mill Springs and with Felix Zollicoffer’s forces at Johnson’s Island, where he died. Other items include war records and photographs concerning Dean and Johnson’s Island cemetery.

A 1942 note written by Marine Terry Cleon McCluskey to his mother, Mrs. James McCluskey, Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Japanese claimed that all Marines had been killed in Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. To counteract this Japanese propaganda, a U.S. officer had the men write their families putting that location on the top of the page. Also, 1993 explanatory comments related to the note. Includes copies of newspaper clippings related to McCluskey’s war service in the Pacific.

This paper examines how both the Army as an organization and its small unit leaders attempted to maintain the soldiers’ morale in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Morale was critical to the Allied victory in the war, yet the morale of frontline GIs was often neglected. This occurred with such frequency that many combat soldiers suffered from a new category of wound known as “combat exhaustion.” Through an examination of what influenced combat soldiers’ morale, a clearer understanding of what the Army did well and how it failed to support combat GIs emerges, as does an …
