The Octofoil

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2599. World War II letters to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, teenager Frances Ann Wade from James T. Smith and David W. Kerr. Smith, a Kentuckian serving in the Navy, writes about his training in Vermont and his service in the Pacific. Kerr, a soldier from Ohio, writes from nearby Camp Campbell, Kentucky, and from France after his deployment. The letters describe their daily activities and reveal their plans for the future.

Letters of Josephine Rogers (Rowan) Reid, written from Federal Hill, Bardstown, Kentucky to a friend, “Mary.” She writes in 1860 of treatment for an injured foot and an offer of marriage; reacts to Mary’s marriage to a Mr. Keating, notes the anniversary of her brother John’s death, and reports on her brother Lytle’s Civil War service in 1863; and writes of her own marriage and forthcoming move to New Orleans in 1865.

This original muster roll contains the names, dates and places of enlistment, and the service records of the 114 men of Company K, 1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It was called up by the Governor when the Spanish-American War started in April 1898. This ebook includes a short unit history of the regiment and company, short bios of the officers, and brief histories of the camps that the unit occupied. At the end of the book is an alphabetical list of the soldiers.

Also includes “A Sketch of My Life," a short autobiography written by DeWitt, and a memorial written by one of his children.
