This is a study of the Civil War through the letters of Cornelius L. Moore, a New York soldier in the Army of the Potomac. His letters span the years between August 1861- August 1864 and reveal a typical Union soldier's attitudes and experiences. Moore discussed such topics as the draft, the use of black soldiers, army leadership, and soldier life. His insight and frankness about these and other subjects make this story more than simply another account of a Civil War participant.

The purpose of this paper is to study the political and legal implications of the shooting of a Union officer, 2nd Lieutenant Alanson C. Sanborn, by Dr. David Minton Wright, a Norfolk physician, on July 11, 1863 in that city. Dr. Wright, who was tried and found guilty by a military commission, appealed his conviction to President Abraham Lincoln, who denied it. The subject of this paper is a Union "Board of Strategy" convened by the Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, in June of IS61 to examine all matters pertaining to the naval blockade of the Confederacy. The idea for the board originated with Alexander Dallas Bache, Superintendent of the Coast Survey; in addition to him, the board consisted of Major John Gross Bernard of the Army and Captain Samuel Francis Du Pont and Commander Charles Henry Davis of the Navy.

The case of General 'Tomoyuki Yamashita, the subject of this thesis, established a precedent in international law, at least so far as the United States respected that law, Its successful prosecution prepared the way for the prosecution of numerous, subsequent war crimes cases, upon a standard of liability developed and approved by the United States in Yamashita, and without regard for the attenuated procedural protections granted in American civil courts. General Mac-Arthur played an important part in Yamashita’s trial, and this essay shall also discuss the extent of his interest and involvement in the case.

The subject of this paper is the development of governmental policies toward the freedmen especially labor policies and the establishment of schools and relief programs for the freedmen in the tidewater area of Virginia during the Civil War. The first extensive school system for the freedmen was launched in this area, and it was in this area in November, 1863 that General Benjamin F. Butler created a central authority for the administration of Freedmen's Affairs.
