"I was very down after Dutch was hit and Albring was killed. They were the first serious casualties in our group since landing at Inchon. This was the first time I was personally affected and made very aware of how vulnerable we all were. We had been in other firefights north of Seoul with North Koreans but had not suffered any serious injuries. The fact that the Chinese were now our enemy seemed to hit everyone that the situation had definitely changed and there was …

"So Long Boys ... Take Care Of Yourselves": Vice Suppression And Civil-Military Relations At Chanute Field During World War Ii, Adelheid Napier
Masters Theses
The United States' entry into World War II brought many changes to its communities. Many towns and villages found themselves transformed almost virtually overnight into military communities. A sudden influx of military personnel presented various difficulties for the communities attempting to adjust. When problems arose concerning both the military members and their civilian hosts, the success or failure experienced in meeting the challenges hinged on the ability and willingness of both factions to cooperate. Chanute Field, an Army Air Force base in Illinois, successfully rose to that challenge when faced with the increasing problem of vice activity and a rising …
An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson
An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson
Masters Theses
The Allied defeat at Arnhem, Holland in September 1944 marked the end of one of the most bold and audacious, ground and airborne operations ever undertaken. Many military historian have incorrectly labeled Operation MARKET-GARDEN an intelligence failure. This statement is true only in so far as the Allied intelligence structure failed to persuade their commanders to alter the planned invasion despite the voluminous intelligence data acquired. But did these commander have hidden agendas which made intelligence almost irrelevant?
The purpose of this research is to investigate the Allied, strategic and operational intelligence preparation for Operation MARKET-GARDEN and determine its adequacy. …
"Easy Or Hard" The Mentality Of Survival: The Gi In Europe In World War Two, Brian R. Bowen
"Easy Or Hard" The Mentality Of Survival: The Gi In Europe In World War Two, Brian R. Bowen
Masters Theses
An oral history compiled from recollections of fourteen combat veterans, documented by over forty hours of tape-recorded interviews, the paper recreates GIs' mentality upon entering combat. The formation of the collective mentality is examined by exploring the attitudes, motivations, and historical circumstances determining thought and actions of these reluctant, yet dedicated soldiers. The collective mentality, defined as the way of thinking allowing the majority to best cope with their predicament, answers why men fought and how they persevered once in combat. Explaining sustained combat performance the paper proves how the collective mentality gave Gls the will and ability to withstand …

Bulletin 257 - Coles County In The Civil War 1861-1865, Lavern M. Hamand
Bulletin 257 - Coles County In The Civil War 1861-1865, Lavern M. Hamand
Eastern Illinois University Bulletin
Each of the 102 counties in Illinois made its own contribution to the enviable war record of the state. Coles County ranked near the top of the 102 names. Her population in 1860 was 14,174. Her total troop quota for the entire war was 2,728, and she furnished 2,741 in all, or 13 men in excess of the quota. In the final analysis, not more than 3 counties furnished more troops in proportion to the population than did Coles.
Volunteering in Coles did not lag until the latter part of the war. On July 1, 1864, Coles led all other …

During the Civil War, there were constant rumors of a vast plot to subvert portions of the North to the cause of the Confederacy. These rumors were particularly prevalent in the states along the Ohio River, and Illinois was no exception. The concensus [sic] of opinion was that Rebel agents were circulating through these states for the purpose of detaching portions of them from the Union cause.
