This thesis argues that the industrious Californio people continued to prosper in Los Angeles after statehood in 1850. Certain historians have emphasized the hardworking Californio culture at various points in Los Angeles history. But no one has defended their overall work ethic. Thus, this thesis goes farther than other historians in discrediting the notion that Californio Angelinos died out quickly because they could not sustain success under American leadership.

After all, from 1861 to 1865 the nation pledged itself to what amounted to a moral regime change, especially concerning race and slavery—only to realize that it had no practical plan for implementing it. The Reinvention of the Canadian Armed Forces Chaplaincy offers an analysis of how an historically Christian religious organization, one prominently sited within an important Canadian institution, adapted to pluralism. This research is the first to examine Canada’s military chaplaincy since Benham Rennick’s (2011) more broadly focused study of the role of religion in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). My study is the first to focus specifically on the chaplaincy and on the ways in which it has sought to develop and maintain a pluralist identity. George Oliver Diamond's autobiography, written for his children and grandchildren and focusing on his experiences as a member of the 559th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion in Europe during World War II. He received a portion of his military training in Bowling Green, Kentucky, returning to the city after the war to work and raise his family. He saw combat duty during the final months of the war.

Typescript copy (prepared in 1911) of Marcus Bearden DeWitt’s pocket memorandum book from March-June 1863 and May 1865. A chaplain with the 8th Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A), DeWitt chronicles conditions during the Civil War, including camp life, travel, family visits, and religion. Also includes “A Sketch of My Life," a short autobiography written by DeWitt, and a memorial written by one of his children.

The Yom Kippur War of 1973 saw Israel suffer nearly twice the casualties and triple the duration of the previous war. This is in contradiction to the fact that Israel, following its spectacular success in the Six-Day War of 1967, was in a far better position than it had been in 1967. This work will analyze the problem of Armor preeminence in the Israeli Defense Force first to prove the existence of preeminence, then to qualify its effect in the war and then to qualify its importance in the differing factors between the 1967 and 1973 Wars. In 1871, Willard Young, eleventh son of Brigham Young, was the first Mormon to receive an appointment to West Point Academy. His attendance at the military academy drew national attention and criticism from opponents of polygamy. Despite the opposition, he soon gained the respect of his classmates and graduated fourth in his class. He returned to teach engineering in 1879, served in the Spanish-American War, earning a commendation from President McKinley, and during World War I was supervisor of army engineering work on the Missouri River.
