[Excerpt] “Despite the generous inclusion by President Reagan of the many soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines in the concept of "the people" of this republic, it is not altogether dear whether one whose status has changed from ordinary "citizen" to "a member of the armed forces" can legitimately claim any of the constitutional protections of citizenship until he or she is no longer a member of the armed forces. This collection consists of seven nineteenth century documents, including: An 1830 account of goods sold. The two parties are P. Beirne & Co. (spelling uncertain) and Benjamin Lemasters, and it is unclear of who is selling goods to whom. Survey of Lemasters’ plot of 1135 acres in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The same mylar enclosure includes another copy of a survey from 1788 for Henry Banks. Letter dated 1835 form the War Department’s Pension Office to Lemasters relating to his service in the Revolutionary War.

The case of General 'Tomoyuki Yamashita, the subject of this thesis, established a precedent in international law, at least so far as the United States respected that law, Its successful prosecution prepared the way for the prosecution of numerous, subsequent war crimes cases, upon a standard of liability developed and approved by the United States in Yamashita, and without regard for the attenuated procedural protections granted in American civil courts. General Mac-Arthur played an important part in Yamashita’s trial, and this essay shall also discuss the extent of his interest and involvement in the case.

This 1904 reprint of President Ulysses S. Grant’s 1870 Executive Order was transcribed and published in vol. I of Charles Kappler’s Indian Affairs. Laws and Treaties. In addition to Grant’s executive order setting apart a reservation for the Arikara, Gros Ventre (Hidatsa), and Mandan, this document includes Captain Wainwright’s Proposal recommending a reservation for the three tribes, E.S. Parker’s Response, and J.D. Cox’s forward to the president.

This Executive Order, issued by President Ulysses S. Grant on April 12, 1870, established the Fort Berthold Reservation. In addition to Grant’s Executive Order, this document includes a series of letters, proposals, and endorsements for the creation of a reservation for the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. Importantly, this document also contains the original map outlining the proposed boundaries and the president’s diagram which significantly reducing the size of the reservation.
