Clauve (pronounced "clove" as in the spice) was initiated as a segment of a project suggested by Betty Kelley, a close personal friend and colleague at APS, who is interested in history and research of all types. The initial idea was to interview retired women who had been in the work world during a time when most women stayed in the home, raising children. The project was designed to research the reasons for their working outside the home, and the influences in their lives that brought it about.

The History of California Agriculture: Focus on Women Farmworkers draws on historical accounts, personal narratives, and photographs to explore the experiences of various labor groups during the development of California’s agricultural system. It shows how gender, race, nationality, immigration laws, economic pressure, and seasonal work were used to control workers and keep wages low. McBane puts special emphasis on women farmworkers, highlighting how women balanced fieldwork with domestic responsibilities while also being paid less and given fewer opportunities.

The demands made by industrialization upon the worker were often severe, whether in England or France, Russia or the United States. He had to give up the somewhat desultory habits of work which had usually sufficed him and his ancestors from the beginnings of time. Significantly enough, one of Arkwright's first steps after establishing his factory was to draw up a code of discipline designed to keep his employees steadily on the job.
