Soldiers Of Science--Agents Of Culture: American Archaeologists In The Office Of Strategic Services (Oss), Despina Lalaki
Publications and Research
"Scientificity" and appeals to political independence are invaluable tools when institutions such as the American School of Classical Studies at Athens attempt to maintain professional autonomy. Nonetheless, the cooperation of scientists and scholars with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), among them archaeologists affiliated with the American School, suggests a constitutive affinity between political and cultural leadership. This relationship is here mapped in historical terms, while, at the same time, sociological categorizations of knowledge and its employment are used in order to situate archaeologists in their broader social and political context and to evaluate their work not merely as agents …

Evolutionism And Historical Particularism At The St. Petersburg Museum Of Anthropology And Ethnography, Sergei Kan

The paper describes the early 20th century debates between several leading Russian anthropologists, including Lev Shternberg, on the best way of displaying artifacts in the newly refurbished Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology in St. Petersburg. These debates revealed major tensions and contradictions between evolutionism and historical particularism, as well as universalism and nationalism within Russian anthropology of that era.

Sacred Texts And Introductory Texts: The Case Of Mead’S Samoa, Terence E. Hays

A survey of 118 introductory anthropology textbooks published in the period 1929–1990 examines the ways in which Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa has been presented to college undergraduates. In contrast to Derek Freeman’s claim that her conclusions about Samoan sexuality and adolescence have been reiterated (approvingly) in an “unbroken succession of anthropological textbooks,” it appears that this work has been ignored almost as often as it has been cited. Criticisms of Mead, although relatively few and almost entirely methodological, have also been incorporated into textbooks, both before and following Freeman’s 1983 book, Margaret Mead and Samoa. In a letter to Obersturmbannführer Sievers, Dr. Spengler notes that dowsing rod researchers/users were not targeted in action taken against occult groups, but some may have been arrested if they were active in other occult activities. The letter states that the head of the security police and the SD want to meet with these groups to discuss scientific problems related to the occult. It was not expected that research of dowsing rods would be included in the planned work.

In a letter dated August 7, 1941, Josef Wimmer asks Ahnenerbe Curator Walther Wüst and Ahnenerbe Reichsgeschäftsführer Wolfram Sievers for information regarding an article in the Journal of Dowsing Rod Research. The article addresses the future of dowsing rod research. Wimmer adds that it is rumored that a research institute will be created to manage future research. He requests information first from Wüst and in the second part of the document, reports that Wüst had no information and asks that Sievers please find out what he can and let Wimmer know.

This letter from Josef Wimmer to Ahnenerbe Curator Walther Wüst reports on a visit to his apartment by the criminal police. The police interrupted his work day, seized all documents related to dowsing rod research, including his correspondence with the Ahnenerbe. They also confiscated his dowsing rods and magnetic theodolite. He then spent 2 1/2 hours in interrogation at the police station before a call to the state police in Munich led to his release.
