This doctoral thesis offers an original and valuable contribution to the study of the genealogy of the literary canon between 1939 and 1968. During Francisco Franco´s dictatorship, Spanish Universities underwent a series of important changes in its academic and management configuration and in the way Spanish elites envisioned Higher Education inside the regime. This research focuses in the role that Spanish scholars, inside Hispanic and Modern Language Departments, played in this renegotiation of a new and crucial sociopolitical mission for College Education. Teachers and students of mathematics often view history of mathematics as just mathematics as they know it, but in another form. This view is based on a misunderstanding of the nature of history of mathematics and the kind of knowledge it attempts to acquire. Unfortunately, it can also lead to a deep sense of disappointment with the history of mathematics itself, and, ultimately, a misunderstanding of the historical nature of mathematics. Evidence supports the notion that mathematics education in the United States is inadequate. There is also evidence that mathematics education deficiencies extend internationally. The worldwide mathematics education deficit appears large enough that improving student performance in this educational problem area could yield great economic benefit. To improve the efficacy of mathematics education, education’s root problems must first be understood. Often supposed educational root problems are considered and contrasted against potential deficiencies of mathematics methodologies and curricula that are based on mainstream educational philosophies. The protests that occurred on American campuses in the 1960s may lend support for that statement. This article will describe major events of the protest movement during this period, describe the societal and institutional contexts within which these protests occurred, and will hopefully encourage student affairs professionals to examine the emerging student activism of today to avoid the mistakes of the past. First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein

This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

Throughout its development, College of the Siskiyous (COS) has ignited much political discussion before and since the district was formed in 1957. Some of these discussions have been positive, while others have become nasty. These discussions indicate that there are differences within the county resulting mainly from regional differences. This project illustrates how these discussions and the college's development have affected the college and its residents in many ways. A survey of 118 introductory anthropology textbooks published in the period 1929–1990 examines the ways in which Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa has been presented to college undergraduates. In contrast to Derek Freeman’s claim that her conclusions about Samoan sexuality and adolescence have been reiterated (approvingly) in an “unbroken succession of anthropological textbooks,” it appears that this work has been ignored almost as often as it has been cited. Criticisms of Mead, although relatively few and almost entirely methodological, have also been incorporated into textbooks, both before and following Freeman’s 1983 book, Margaret Mead and Samoa.
