The gift was presented in memory of the donor's wife, Lucy Winton McVitty, who was a trustee of the College from December 30, 1926, until her death on August 7, 1941.

The Charlotte Williams Memorial Hospital, a private hospital in Richmond, Virginia, opened as a private hospital in 1903. The hospital advertised its aim as relieving "suffering humanity by every means known to medical science." It had private rooms for paying patients and separate wards for "charity" patients. The aim was to make no profit and increase the number of free beds quickly. The hospital was deeded to the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 1913 and used as a teaching hospital; it later housed nursing students. In 1986, the building was sold, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) headquarters …
