The Browne Family Papers consist of incoming correspondence (mainly from the 1840s to the 1850s) of Newton Browne and Jane Morris Browne from various relatives, together with deeds, wills, indentures, land plats, photographs, and various other papers concerning the Browne Family of Anderson County, South Carolina. The collection also includes information on the allied families of Breazeale, Carpenter, Dobbins, Gunnin, Hillhouse, McFall, McGregor, and Morris.

Theses and Dissertations

The Genealogical Society of Utah initiated a worldwide microfilming program at the advent of modern microfilm technology. It succeeded in negotiating for and filming records because of the religious commitment of its leaders and workers, the financial assistance of the LDS Church, the increased concern for records loss as demonstrated by World War II, the maturation of microfilm technology after the war, and the concentration of many religious records in civil archives. Religious commitment enthused the Society's leaders to persist in their efforts in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The collection contains a compilation of genealogy and local history materials created or copied by NSDAR members while conducting chapter activities. Materials are primarily focused on Wood and Wayne County deeds, birth, death, and will data, but also includes family Bible records submitted by NSDAR chapter members throughout the state of West Virginia in addition to miscellaneous county records, include deeds, will abstracts, and cemetery records, from around the state.

This collection is composed of two pages entitled, “How many ancestors have you?” and contains a list of ancestors (one for each generation and when they were born or died), what rulers in England ruled while each ancestor lived, and how many ancestors you would have each generation for twenty-four generations. The pages were found in William S. Appleton’s “Memorials of the Cranes of Chilton” published in Cambridge in 1868. The pages are undated, and the date is approximated based on the book the pages were found in.

Papers consist primarily of diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, genealogies and photographs of five families: the Glanville-Carter families of St. Louis, Mo.; the Whittakers of Preble County, Ohio; Dorothy Whittaker Atkins of Huntington, West Virginia.; and the Heacocks of Bucks County, Penna.

A significant part of the collection are the diaries of Annie Heacock, a teacher at the Penn School for freed slaves in Beaufort, South Carolina, 1864-1869. Other diaries include the Civil War diary of John Whittaker, a surgeon in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
