Carrie Eldridge is a genealogical researcher in Chesapeake, Ohio. This collection contains photocopies of many county record books of the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, ranging from the American Revolution until the early twentieth century. It also contains her personal research files on topics related to slavery and the Underground Railroad in Ohio and West Virginia as well as local history topics such as church and family histories.

The collection contains of two manuscripts bound together, “George Webb Family Deeds Recorded in States of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia” and “Family Bible of Benjamin Franklin Swann, Louisa Jane Hatfield Swann”. These manuscripts were copied by Marion S. McCullough and Helen B. Webb, both members of the Westmoreland Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. They former manuscript contains transcriptions of six deed records while the latter contains four pages of birth, marriage, death, and other family bible records. An index is included.

This collection consists of two folders containing materials disparate in subject matter: one consisting of a list of many descendants of John Marshall compiled by Sam Clagg for Marshall University’s Sesqui-Centennial Committee in 1987, another of materials sent to Marshall University by one of these descendants. The folder compiled by Sam Clagg with a list of descendants includes an address for each one. Also included in the same folder are three letters regarding the acquisition of Marvin L. This collection contains materials compiled by Jeannette Pemberton in her life of collecting sheet music, ephemera, and books. The collection contains manuscript and printed sheet music ranging in date from the 1850s to the 1940s as well as fourteen books on a range of topics, mostly English grammar, from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. Also included are cassette and VHS tapes of interviews between Susan Pavlovic and Jeanette Pemberton as well as ephemera such as event invitations, concert programs, souvenir movie programs. Some books and sheet music have names of individuals from the Adams family as well as other names.

This collection includes physician’s notebooks, photographs, and newspaper clippings related to the Hallanan family. The bulk of the collection is four volumes related to Thomas B. Hallanan’s practice as a physician, including a birth records book for the years 1920 and 1921 for births near Barboursville and McComas and three physician’s notebooks tracking accounts with patients and notes about visits. The four photographs in the collection are unidentified. Newspaper clippings relate to the social and political lives of Walter S. Hallanan, Imogene Hallanan, Thomas Hallanan, and Betty Hallanan.

This collection is composed of two pages entitled, “How many ancestors have you?” and contains a list of ancestors (one for each generation and when they were born or died), what rulers in England ruled while each ancestor lived, and how many ancestors you would have each generation for twenty-four generations. The pages were found in William S. Appleton’s “Memorials of the Cranes of Chilton” published in Cambridge in 1868. The pages are undated, and the date is approximated based on the book the pages were found in.

Papers consist primarily of diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, genealogies and photographs of five families: the Glanville-Carter families of St. Louis, Mo.; the Whittakers of Preble County, Ohio; Dorothy Whittaker Atkins of Huntington, West Virginia.; and the Heacocks of Bucks County, Penna.

A significant part of the collection are the diaries of Annie Heacock, a teacher at the Penn School for freed slaves in Beaufort, South Carolina, 1864-1869. Other diaries include the Civil War diary of John Whittaker, a surgeon in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
