Guides to Manuscript Collections
This collection is primarily composed of letters from George Hechler to his sister Kate Hechler during his service in the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. The letters discuss George’s experience in the Civil War, covering camp life at Parkersburg and Summersville, to the battlefields of Lewisburg, Antietam, Chickamauga and others. All letters include typescript transcriptions of the text in separate folders, and one letter includes a piece of printed ephemera as an enclosure. This collection consists primarily of correspondence sent from William McClelland while he was in the air force describing his experiences while training and during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, specifically the Philippines. Letters to William from his family include those sent while he was missing in action and are emotionally fraught. Papers by Arthur and Myrtle include information on religious topics, such as pamphlets, notes, and more related to their participation in the Second Presbyterian Church of Huntington. Guides to Manuscript Collections
Ms. Enslow was a Huntington, West Virginia journalist. Photographs and slides comprise a major portion of this collection. Many of the photographs were for use by the newspaper; there are also a great number of informal snapshots, family photographs, and photographs of Miss Enslow herself. Photographs of notable persons and old photographic portraits dating from the 19th century complete this part of the collection. The slides are primarily those which Miss Enslow took in Europe while she was tour director for the Huntington Publishing Company.
