From August to November 1940, the territories of French Equatorial Africa rallied to Charles de Gaulle’s self-proclaimed Free French government in London, rather than the Vichy government set up after the German defeat of France in June. While this episode concerns European actions in European-ruled colonies, African actors pervade the story, especially as soldiers. Africans constituted the indirect audience of all the rallies by living in the territories whose policies were affected. Africans served as actors in the role of soldiers. As soldiers, African actors exhibited agency both in actions taken during operations and by their presence in the colonial …

Gaetano Salvemini was one of the earliest political exiles during Fascism. Before his exile Salvemini had the reputation as a well-respected historian and political activist. He taught history at the University of Florence among other universities. Salvemini was known for his intelligence, detailed research and analysis, as well as his unflinching ideals. After his exile Salvemini spent some time in England and France. During this time he traveled to the United States for a lecture tour. This thesis will examine the Anglo-American press coverage of Germany's secret rearmament between 1933 and 1935, with the aim of pursuing three main objectives:
1. Describe the rearmament process occurring in Germany and how it related to, or influenced, the country's position in international affairs.
2. Investigate the accuracy and objectivity of Anglo-American press coverage of the German rearmament. This goal will be achieved by analyzing and comparing information from several major American and British newspapers and magazines from 1933 to 1935 with data gleaned from the principal secondary sources on Nazi rearmament and foreign policy.

After World War II, every country that had been touched by or involved in the war had to come to terms with its past. In the case of Switzerland, the Swiss government, the army and some of the country’s leadership established a strong official historical memory of the war, portraying Switzerland as a neutral, benevolent and well-fortified country that remained innocent and untouched by the war.

The Jewish Community Center on Cumberland Avenue in Portland, Maine was the site of United Service Organization (USO) social events, held regularly from at least October 1943 to September 1946. Most of the servicemen (and some women who were nurses) who attended events at the Community Center were in the Navy, stationed on shops docked or anchored in Casco Bay. These social events were sometimes held out on the islands. Although hosted by the Jewish Community Center, anyone was welcome, regardless of religion. My dissertation analyzes the representation of Germans as victims of the Third Reich and the Second World War in post-1990 German memory. After unification, there no longer were two states that could each blame the other as the heir of National Socialism and this past had to be renegotiated. The claim that many Germans had been victims became central as evidenced by the vast number of popular literature, commercial cinema and television programs of this subject. The Bridge

Peeling the Onion is the intriguing name of the memoirs written by the celebrated German author, Gunter Grass, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. His memoirs cover the twenty-year period from the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 until the publication of his best selling book, The Tin Drum, in 1959. In other words, the book begins in Danzig, where he was born and lived with his parents and sister, and it also ends in Danzig, where the novel, The Tin Drum, takes place.

The Yellow Envelope, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

This short story is an example of a collaboration of two outstandingly productive Danish Americans, one in literature, the other in the world of art. The names of J. Christian Bay (1871-1962) and Christian Petersen (1885-1961) have appeared before in The Bridge. Two translations of Bay's work have been published; the first was in an article about an account of a fictional visit to Chicago by Hans Christian Andersen.2 The second was a translation of his article about the plant scientist Niels Ebbesen Hansen.3 Two reviews of books about Christian Petersen have appeared in The Bridge.4

Seit Kriegsende 1945 gelten die Akten des Amtes "Oberster Kommissar für die Operationszone Alpenvorland" Franz Hofer als verschollen.2 Die Quellen- und Wissenslage zur Geschichte der Operationszone Alpenvorland ist dementsprechend dürftig. Das trifft besonders auf das Sondergericht für die Operationszone Alpenvorland zu. Im Rahmen der Bestandsaufnahme im Archiv des Landesgerichts (Tribunal) in Bozen im Oktober 2001 konnte nun auch ein kleiner Bestand Akten des Sondergerichts geborgen werden.
