In text and pictures this nicely produced book presents "an account of some of the events that helped shape the Bern community during its first 100 years" (iv). On the basis of newspaper accounts, interviews, and pictorial treasures hidden in attics or scrapbooks, the author has summarized events in twelve chronologically arranged chapters that consist of vignettes and provide a mosaic-like overview. Except for chapter one featuring "Days of Pioneers (1842-1884)," each section covers a decade identified by some major event as, for instance, "The World War II Era (1940-1949)". In 1848 two settlers from Switzerland, Victor Probst and John Waecker, on their way upstream from Galena, Illinois, arrived at a site then called Three Mile Bluff, on the Mississippi in Western Wisconsin. They decided to stay, and soon made a living by cutting firewood for the steamboats. In subsequent years other Swiss immigrants were to follow, principally from the Grisons and the Canton of Berne, but also from the native village of one of the first settlers, namely Biberist in the Canton of Solothurn. I am of Swiss ancestry on both sides of the family. My paternal Grandfather Andreas Schifferly, b. 1811, was from Kt. Aargau. My mother was a Stalder from Lutzelfluh, b. 1851, and baptized by the eminent Jeremias Gotthelf, who was also a dear fried of the Stalder family, as well as their pastor. His novels were so much enjoyed by this family, and they carried them to the USA when they left Switzerland for Ohio, in 1853.

Even if we do not grasp the full meaning of his answers, or worse, if we do not even understand his questions, our effort will nevertheless be rewarded. It will at least reveal that surface reality may be likened to a shield that protects from those arrows of questions that target the mysterious abyss of which we humans are all a part and whose contemplation is bound to set us free.
