Monnet, The General, And The Community Of Six: French Policy On European Integration In The 1950s And 1960s, Daniel A. Gagnon
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
This thesis examines the roles of Jean Monnet and General Charles de Gaulle in crafting French policy towards a united Europe during the postwar decades. Monnet strongly supported supranational integration in which the nations of Europe cede power to common governing institutions. But, French policy changed dramatically when de Gaulle came to power in 1958. As a nationalist he refused to sacrifice France’s independence by ceding power to the common institutions. He risked the existence of a united Europe, but after his sudden departure in 1969 it became clear that French popular opinion opposed his limiting policy towards European integration.

During the late 1950's the French film industry's hard-won financial stability during the Occupation and liberation years had all but disappeared. Combined with the dwindling, unpredictable nature of French audiences, the multi-star, literary adaptation dramas French studios produced were no longer reliable. In response to these dilemmas a transformation took place in French cinema. Known as the nouvelle vague (or French New Wave), the movement was largely, but not completely, a reaction to France's declining film industry. The Spiritual And Secular Effects Of The Holocaust, Christine Coughlin
Fall 2014, Storytelling and the Life of Faith
My research paper focused on the topic of the Holocaust, and how this tragic event in history had a lasting effect, not only on the victims, but on future generations as well. My paper focused on two autobiographies, “Night,” and “After Long Silence” written by Elie Wiesel and Helen Fremont respectively, each of which portray a different perspective on the Holocaust and the significance it had in the peoples’ lives. Using these two autobiographies, as well as a number of articles referencing the Holocaust, I portrayed how this horrible period of history shaped many peoples' lives, both secularly and spiritually.

Rhetoric Of Revolt In Thirteenth-Century Castile And England, Jillian M. Bjerke

This thesis studies the rhetoric of revolt in the thirteenth century by comparing documents and chronicles from the Barons War against Henry III of England (1258-1265) and the revolt of the Castilian nobles against Alfonso X of Castile (1271-1273). By undertaking close readings of these Latin and Castilian texts, I uncover many similar approaches to writing revolt in two roughly contemporary and little-compared rebellions. The first comparison of the two briefs submitted by the rebelling English barons to Louis IX of France for arbitration in 1264 with the purported agreement between the Castilian nobles and Alfonso X presented to Enrique …

This work offers an interdisciplinary study of preventative health in 16th and 17th century Italy. Previous studies on the practice and prescription of early modern preventative health are few, and scholars have tended to assume that medical understanding of the body's humors remained relatively static during this period.

Printing And Protestants: An Empirical Test Of The Role Of Printing In The Reformation, Jared Rubin

The causes of the Protestant Reformation have long been debated. This paper seeks to revive and econometrically test the theory that the spread of the Reformation is linked to the spread of the printing press. I test this theory by analyzing data on the spread of the press and the Reformation at the city level. An econometric analysis that instruments for omitted variable bias with a city's distance from Mainz, the birthplace of printing, suggests that cities with at least one printing press by 1500 were at minimum 29 percentage points more likely to be Protestant by 1600.

Many of these stories are connected to wars, for example the tale of how George Washington and his troops crossed the frozen Delaware river to surprise the British and turn the tide of the Revolutionary War, or the way the American public rallied after the attack on Pearl Harbor to retool the American economy and support American troops in the fight against fascism. The 20th century was a period of turmoil for the people of Ireland. After fighting for independence in the first quarter of the century, Ireland was partitioned into two separate entities, the Irish-controlled Republic of Ireland in the South and the British-controlled Northern Ireland in the Northeast. The middle half of the century saw bloody violence and sectarian fighting between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the various Unionist paramilitary forces in Northern Ireland. Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Weimar, Germany, was a place of suffering, cruelty and death during World War II and during the first five years of the cold war. As many were tortured and perished there, it has since become a place of remembrance. Being one of the few concentration camps to not be destroyed by the Nazis before they could be liberated, since its final closure in 1950 numerous memorials have been erected to commemorate the events that took place and the people who fell victim to those events. This paper explores the role of the French Army and the role of General Charles de Gaulle in the Crisis of May 1958, and how the Crisis marked the end of the French Fourth Republic. The role of civilians in starting the uprising in Algeria is highlighted, and it is emphasized that the French Army joined the revolt once it was in progress.
