This essay, part of a book-length project on the Infanta Catalina Micaela, Duchess of Savoy, examines Catalina’s relationship with her husband and her reaction to assuming political control in the fall of 1588 during Carlo's first major absence from Turin after their marriage.

Uncertain States: Repatriation And Citizenship In The Northeastern Adriatic, 1918-1921, Maura E. Hametz

From 1918 to 1921, officials of the Italian government operating in the new Adriatic territories inherited from the Habsburg monarchy struggled to meet the needs of local populations in an atmosphere of economic dislocation, political unrest, and increasing ethnic violence. This article examines the evolution of Italian policies and practices relating to border crossings, repatriation, and citizenship in the dynamic period from Armistice to official annexation. Using archival records held in Trieste and Rome, it explores officials treatment of inhabitants of the new borderlands, migrants, and refugees in the transformation of Habsburg lands of the multi-ethnic empire to Italian provinces …

This thesis seeks to examine the factors that resulted in the fall of the Second Polish Republic and track its downward trajectory. Examining the Second Republic, from its creation in 1918 to its loss of recognition in 1945, reveals that its demise began long before German tanks violated Poland’s frontiers on 1 September, 1939. Commencing with the competing ideas of what a Polish state would be and continuing through the political and foreign policy developments of the inter-war years, a pattern begins to emerge -that of the Poles’ search for their place in modern Europe. Chapter three of Building Culture, “The New Woman’s Home. Kitchens, Laundry, Furnishings,” discusses household culture and modernization. It begins with the Frankfurt Kitchen and its designer, Grete Lihotzky, and continues with a discussion of electricity and the architect Adolf Meyer, and its expansion with the example of the electric laundries in the Frankfurt settlements. The next segment is a discussion of new furniture design, small, inexpensive furniture that was an essential partner to contemporary small house design and was avidly researched in the Frankfurt offices. Designers here include Kramer, Cetto and Schuster.

In 1576, after Edmund Grindal, archbishop of Canterbury, presumed to lecture Queen Elizabeth on the importance of preaching and on her duty to listen to such lectures, his influence diminished precipitously, and leadership of the established English church fell to Bishop Aylmer. Grindal’s friends on the queen’s Privy Council, “forward” Calvinists (or ultra-Protestants), were powerless to save him from the consequences of his indiscretion, which damaged the ultras’ other initiatives’ chances of success. This paper concerns one of those initiatives. From the late 1560s, they urged their queen “actively” to intervene in the Dutch wars. They collaborated with Calvinists on …

For my research I have decided to focus specifically on Americans traveling to Paris. In the realm of tourism, Paris is the epitome of American commodification. Americans who traveled to Paris could increasingly buy into a commodified version of Parisian culture, a culture that in many ways catered toward American tourists. The newly transnational period of the 1950s provides the perfect background for the examination of international tourism. Also interesting to this time period is the context of the Cold War and the great Red Scare that pervaded American thinking at this time. This thesis project will explain how the …

The folk high schools remain an important part of Danish culture over one hundred and fifty years after their birth. Although Denmark, and the world, is very different now than it was in the nineteenth century, this unique form of education is still an effective model. On the one hand, it would be a mistake to suppose that the folk high school cannot be relevant outside of the culture in which it originated. However, it would be equally wrong to suppose that the folk high school has not changed or evolved over time, or that it can be transplanted to …
