With the Golden Age of Alpinism (ca. 1850-1890) having drawn the world’s attention to the necessity of trained and experienced Swiss mountain guides, the services of such guides were in high demand, and not just in Switzerland. Climbing as a summer sport began to take hold in Europe in the 1860s. English alpinists, along with their Swiss local guides, began checking the mountains of the Swiss Alps off their list.

Author and genealogist Laurence Overmire stated, “History remembers only the celebrated, genealogy remembers them all.”1 His words resonate as we consider the 1821 Swiss emigration to the Red River Settlement (in today’s Manitoba, Canada) followed by their subsequent emigration to the Galena, Illinois, area. Switzerland is globally renowned for its mountains, banks and chocolate, in addition to the quality of its education system, flourishing economy, and low unemployment rate (around 2.5% in 20241). At the heart of this efficient and inclusive economic model is the dual Vocational Education and Training (VET) system, allowing direct entry into the job market. Nearly two-thirds of Swiss youth aged 15 to 18 choose the apprenticeship path, either through dual training in companies or in full-time vocational schools. Annemarie Schwarzenbach wrote this piece about Washington, D.C. shortly after her arrival in the city in late August 1936. She stayed on Waterside Drive at the home of Elizabeth Washburn Wright, the widow of Dr. Hamilton Wright, a specialist in tropical medicine but also a government-appointed anti-drug crusader in the battle against Chinese opium.

Starting as a frontier fur trade post in the 1830’s, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, played a prominent role in western expansion. Purchased by the United States government in 1849, the fort’s location near immigrant trails and Native American homelands provided a front row seat to American history. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.

The dome of the Swiss parliament’s building, the central part of the so-called “Bundeshaus” in Bern, is framed by four stained glass windows. Modern Germany has a reputation for militarism and expansion. This reputation is often distilled into a simple view of German states as aggressive, regimented, and militaristic. Peter Wilson’s Iron and Bloodexplores how conflict has shaped German history since the 1500s. An accomplished historian of the Thirty Years War, Wilson is the right author for this work, and is able to draw out important themes and subtleties of German military history. Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach arrived in the United States in late August 1936 at the invitation of the American photographer Barbara Hamilton Wright. It was the first of three visits over the next five years, during which Annemarie reported on Roosevelt’s America for a variety of Swiss newspapers and illustrated magazines. Her first road trip through the Rust Belt was a success with her Swiss editors and the two women planned a second in the American South in the Fall of 1937.
