Section V: The Rise of Capitalism and the National State to 1500
The west Frankish kingdom of Charles the Bald, which he had received in 843 as his portion of his grandfather's great empire, is geographically the genesis of modern France. In the century of disorder and confusion following the partition of Charlemagne's realm into three kingdoms, government fell into the hands of powerful vassals. From the first, therefore, great lords in France exercised the functions of independent rulers. In 987 they chose one of the weaker of their number, Hugh Capet (987-996), to be king. He and his successors faced two great problems in establishing nationhood in France: how to recover …

Section V: The Rise of Capitalism and the National State to 1500
Royal efforts to create national states and strong monarchies during the later Middle Ages succeeded in England, France, and Spain for different reasons and under different circumstances. In two of the great geographical subdivisions of central Europe the monarchs were not so successful. Eventual unification of Germany and Italy was delayed until the nineteenth century and may be explained by a number of factors, some beyond the control of individual kings and others based on weaknesses in the character of the monarchs themselves.
The political destinies of Germany and Italy became inextricably interwoven with the creation of the Holy Roman …

A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder
A Historical Study Of The Port Of Hull During The Thirteenth Century, Floyd Winfield Snyder
History ETDs
The history of the port of Hull during the thirteenth century has presented a problem for historians in which has never been completely solved. This problem is centered around the traditional building of Hull in 1293 by Edward I. According to this tradition, Hull did not exist until this time. Evidence in the chronicle of the monastery of Meaux and those close and patent rolls, however, indicates that Hull was a port of some importance in the thirteenth century.

The Secular Activities Of The German Episcopate 919-1024, Edgar Nathaniel Johnson
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
The appearance of the monarchical bishop in the early organization of the church is its most outstanding feature. His diocese so far supplants in importance the early Christian community, that in his own person he becomes almost synonymous with the church itself. In the respect paid him and in the affluence of his outward display he vies with the Roman provincial governor. The increasing patrimony of the church comes under his guiding hand, and with time he becomes the dominant administrator in those towns where Roman municipal administration was decadent. Every bishop to some extent nourished ambitions similar to those …

Phantastes Chapter 6: Der Zauberring (The Magical Ring), Friedrich Heinrich Karl
Phantastes Chapter 6: Der Zauberring (The Magical Ring), Friedrich Heinrich Karl
German Romantic and Other Influences
Fouqué, Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte (1777-1843), is an important German writer who helped define German Romanticism. Fouqué’s Undine (1811) was the fairy tale that MacDonald cites in “The Fantastic Imagination” as the ideal fairy tale. Der Zauberring (The Magical Ring, 1813) follows Otto and his cousin Bertha as they go on a series of adventures to find the magic ring. This work, critics argue, influenced not only MacDonald but William Morris, Richard Wagner, and J. R. R. Tolkien.
