On The Social Construction Of Hellenism Cold War Narratives Of Modernity, Development And Democracy For Greece, Despina Lalaki

Hellenism is one of those overarching, ever-changing narratives always subject to historical circumstances, intellectual fashions and political needs. Conversely, it is fraught with meaning and conditioning powers, enabling and constraining imagination and practical life. In this essay I tease out the hold that the idea of Hellas has had on post-war Greece and I explore the ways in which the American anti-communist rhetoric and discussions about political and economic stabilization appropriated and rearticulated Hellenism. To Make This Land Our Own sets out to expand upon a growing historiography of community studies that diverge from the more traditional Puritan, New England model. Purrysburg, South Carolina looked a good deal different than many other communities in early America. One of its peculiarities was the ethnic diversity of the first generation. Many from Switzerland (with ethnic affinities leaning toward either the French or German) and a smattering of Italians, English and Germans, these early pioneers adhered to different Christian tenants, spoke different languages, and held different cultural norms. The work deals with the agricultural village Magden located in the Fricktal that had been part of Upper Austria until 1803 when it became part of the Swiss Canton Aargau. On 24 January 2004, 1200 years to the day when the first known document concerning Magden was dated, the author presented to the people of Magden a history of their village. The Swiss experience had a positive influence on the American Revolution, figured in the debates on adoption of the United States Constitution, and was a matter of commentary in the political struggles of the early Republic. The American model influenced the Swiss Constitution of 1848,t but before that the Swiss Confederation-then 500 years oldhelped inspire the birth of the American Republic, particularly regarding the interrelated concepts of resistance to oppression, independence from foreign states, neutrality, a people's militia, and federalism.

Willem Blaeu's 'Asia Noviter Delineata': Expressions Of Power Through Naval Might And Natural Knowledge In Dutch Mapmaking, Joshua W. Poorman

This paper situates Dutch mapmaker Willem Blaeu’s Asia noviter delineata—part of the Stuckenberg Map Collection in the Gettysburg College Special Collections—within the larger framework of Renaissance thought and a shifting colonial balance of power. The map’s pictorial marginalia expresses a Dutch quest for empirical knowledge that echoed contemporary cabinets of curiosities throughout early modern Europe. Similar to these cabinets, Blaeu’s map can be seen as a cartographic teatro mundi, used to propagate Dutch hegemony through both a robust naval presence and an expanding geographic and natural knowledge of the world.

After Ochs had offered his services in the exportation of Mennonites from Bern, his documentary biography becomes quiet for some time, some ten years. No document is known that shows Bern 's acceptance of his offer of assistance, none even verifying his ex istence. We know through Graffenried's accounts,1 that the landgrave's Carolina endeavor ended in di saster and in the death of surveyor Lawson in September 1711.2 The name Ochs could not be found in any of the decade's consulted sources in Bern with the exception of bapti smal records that name the children born to the Ochs couple.

The biography of Johann Rudolf Ochs (1673-1749) is a work in progress. Despite numerous entries in Swiss dictionaries of artists and artisans, not even a basic curriculum vitae exists. Perhaps worse,

upon enquiry in Bern archives and libraries, surprisingly the learned librarians could not name or locate a single work of art by the famed Piitschiergriiber (seal engraver) or "Gemmenschneider" ( cutter of gems, or cameos) Ochs. From August to November 1940, the territories of French Equatorial Africa rallied to Charles de Gaulle’s self-proclaimed Free French government in London, rather than the Vichy government set up after the German defeat of France in June. While this episode concerns European actions in European-ruled colonies, African actors pervade the story, especially as soldiers. Africans constituted the indirect audience of all the rallies by living in the territories whose policies were affected. Africans served as actors in the role of soldiers. As soldiers, African actors exhibited agency both in actions taken during operations and by their presence in the colonial …

The answer was obvious, but it was a plumb opportunity to observe how the question would be received, Mr. Yoder merely replied, displaying a typical posture- of humility -practiced among the Amish (head slightly bowed but cocked sideways to maintain eye contact): "...we wouldn't appreciate that." There was nothing angry in his voice, denouncing the "worldliness" of the question, but a soft, rehearsed and purposeful tone.
