The United States census of 1860 listed 53,327 Swiss-born residents who represented 1.3 percent of the foreign-born in the nation. John (Johannes) Hitz, Sr. ( I 797- 1864), Swiss Consul General from 1853- 1864 in Washington, D.C., estimated the number of Swiss serving during the Civil War in the Union Army at 6,000. In his 1862 register of names, he listed 537 Swiss in the military. In 1863, he included an additional 302 men. He presented no separate lists for 1861 , 1864, and 1865. Paul de Valliere stated that 4,000 Swiss served in the Union Army in his monumental …

More Swiss participated in the American Civil War than in any other foreign conflict except the Battle of Marignano in 1515 and Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. This work has rescued this important and little-known fact from oblivion, and it is a privilege to introduce this concise study by my friend, Heinrich L. Wirz, and his collaborator, Florian A. Strahm. Mostly as volunteers, the Swiss fought either to maintain the Union, or they risked their lives for the independence of the South. For the first time, this study presents biographical data on l 06 men who were of Swiss nationality or descent, and who participated in the American Civil War. Most of these men were officers. The American Civil War froml861 to 1865 has largely been forgotten in Switzerland. The significance of the war is often overlooked including its sociopolitical impact as well as its military strategic, operational, and tactical importance. This study presents data relating to important Swiss military personnel. The Celtic monastic movement lasted hundreds of years and is responsible for much of the spread of Christianity to the West. Much of the movement’s success can be attributed to the Celtic Christians’ understanding of the importance of the role of creative culture and order as well as an openness and responsiveness to the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is these three things working in tandem that influenced the success of the Celtic monastic movement. This thesis is an analysis of the historical relations between reformer Martin Luther and the Jewish people. Its primary purpose is to defend Luther’s image as a prominent figure in Christian history while considering the possibility of his anti-Semitic views. This thesis focuses particularly on a number of Luther’s written works in order to achieve this goal, with a secondary concentration on historical and incidental defenses that can be used to exonerate him. This thesis also serves to inform contemporary Christians of the controversy surrounding these views and the result of his legacy in more recent centuries.

The Late Works Of Dame Ethel Smyth: A Musical Microcosm Of Interwar British Culture, Emily Morin

This paper examines the late musical compositions of Dame Ethel Smyth in the context of British society and culture between the two World Wars. It focuses on Smyth's large-scale works, especially her operas The Boatswain's Mate (1914) and Entente Cordiale (1923-1924) and her oratorio The Prison (1930). Using these works as examples of the composer's mature style, I draw attention to a number of Smyth's original artistic choices as well as her sophisticated use of social commentary. The purpose of the this study is to understand the rise in auto traffic in the city center of Prague since the Velvet Revolution and to use this understanding to make my own recommendations for policies I believe the city should enact to limit traffic in the macro and micro scale. The theoretical framework was created through observations of three specific streets and through interviews with urban planning experts. As archbishop of Toledo from 1495 to 1517, Francisco Ximénez de Cisneros carried out a multifaceted campaign of support for the Mozarabic rite, which had been preserved in the Middle Ages by Christians living in Toledo under Muslim rule. Although the Roman rite was introduced into the cathedral in 1086, the Toledan Mozarabs had continued to follow their ancient liturgy in their parishes. By the end of the Middle Ages, however, the rite was rarely celebrated. Fearing that it might become obsolete, in 1501 Cisneros endowed a chapel in his cathedral for the Mozarabic rite and established a clergy of …

The monumental nature of Calvin's theological career forever left its impress and guaranteed a perennial home for "Reformed theology" in Switzerland. Idiosyncratically, Reformed theology does not refer to some universal, systematic "theology of the Reformation" (Reformation theology, far from being universal, could be quite conflictual and polymorphous2) but rather to specific and dominant tropes of most Reformation Christian thought, perhaps best summarized by the solae of the Lutherans: Sola Fidei (Faith Alone), Sola Gratia (Grace Alone), Solus Christus (Christ Alone), Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone).3 If we wanted to distill this theological trajectory in one sentence, it could …

This article focuses on a small community in Utah that was home to a large proportion of Danes and other Scandinavians. The Bridge

Many contributors have added signature elements to the story of the “Car Bum Brothers.” Some of these were the original instigators of action during events that transpired over an eighteen- month period, from January 1923 to May 1924, while brothers Svend and Folmer Hansen were on the road traveling in the western states. This they did for the most part in a Model T Ford they bought for fifty dollars and affectionately called “Our Lizzie.” The cast of characters from that time includes a range of immigrant Danes and their off spring who lived scattered in Danish enclaves up and …
