Since his retirement from the Ethnological Museum of the University of Zurich in 1984, Hans Lang has devoted all his time to the American Indian Museum of the City of Zurich, the only such institution in Western Europe. It grew out of the initiative and the tireless collecting efforts of Gottfried and Martha Hotz. Already in his early youth, reading had awakened in G. The great event of the discovery of the New World with its strange, exotic peoples was reflected not only in European literature and art, but also in all areas of music. Especially in the field of music, there are still a number of unexplained phenomena in this context, such as the chaconne, which appeared in Spain soon after the discovery of America. In 1517, the Spanish poet Torres Naharro first mentioned the "chacona" as a peasant dance song. We still don't know how this dance developed or where it came from, but even then, its possible American (Mexican) origins were …

The title of this paper may arouse the expectation that we will concern ourselves mainly with a number of adventurous anecdotes from the biography of a prominent Swiss politician of the late 19th and early 20th century. I do not want to disappoint such expectations altogether. I shall indeed relate several episodes from Emil Frey's life which appear to be worth relating because they are not only quite unusual but - at least to my knowledge - also very little known. The second newsletter of this year consists of a substantial scholarly article on the American career of the Basel politician Emil Frey by our esteemed advisory board member Hans R. Guggisberg, professor of history at the University of Basel. The article was originally presented as a paper at the 1984 annual meeting of our society in Philadelphia. Professor Guggisberg revised the paper for publication here and in Switzerland. Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956) was almost forgotten when he died on a Christmas day after having spent over 20 years in the asylum of Herisau refusing all invitations to continue writing. Yet at the beginning of the century he was well known for his poems (1909), his novels (Geschwister Tanner 1906; Der Gehiilfe 1907; Jakob von Gunten 1908), and his numerous short prose pieces published first in newspapers and magazines, then as collections (Fritz Kochers Aufsatze 1904; Kleine Dichtungen 1914; Poetenleben 1917; Die Rose 1925). The process of the industrialization of a previously agrarian region is not easy to analyze and evaluate since it is made up of and touches upon qualitative as well as quantitative factors of a considerable variety and complexity. Jurg K. Siegenthaler in his monograph Konflikte der Industrialisierung attempts to provide such an analysis on the basis of a historical-comparative study of two distinct cases of 19th century industrialization, Glarus, a small mountain canton of Switzerland, and Scranton, a city in the Lackawanna valley of northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1710, approximately 250 emigrants from the state of Bern, under the leadership of Junker Christoph von Graffenried, settled in North Carolina. They called their settlement Neubern, and thus the name of the state of Bern was probably first brought to the New World. This first Bernese settlement did not develop favorably; many of the immigrants died, and the rest were largely resettled more or less forcibly. Only a few former Swiss people still live in the area today. Nevertheless, the name of the town remained unchanged until the present day.

Every morning when President Reagan leaves the White House and casts worried glances to the left toward Capitol Hill where Congress sits and impedes life for him, he can hardly avoid seeing the equestrian statue in front of the Treasury Building. The statue is one of the great heroes of the United States, a victor from the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman. He is shown mounted and surrounded by symbols of war and peace.

There will be a Christmas greeting card on the drawing board in Danish-born artist Karl Larsen's Detroit studio this fall, just as there has been every year since 1932 when he began the tradition.
