The Bridge

In the year 1863 Morten Christian Pedersen left Sindbjerg Parish north of Vejle (Denmark) for America. He was 28 years old and unmarried. In the following year he remained mainly in Neenah, Wisconsin, where a number of Danes lived. He had conceived the idea of finding a place where it would be possible for people of small means to found a Danish settlement. That dream would not leave him, nor would he let go of the dream; but he took a good look around before he chose a place.

My experience in pioneer life commenced in 1856, after a long and stormy voyage from Denmark to America in that year. I shall, by the kind assistance of the Independent, give a little of my pioneer life and settlement during forty-five years. My thoughts are running back to the first Christmas I celebrated here in America, in 1856. It was a merry one, as you will see farther on. My wife and I were then both young, about twenty-seven years each.

History Faculty Publications

Examines the reasons for the rise and fall of the Catholic League in Amiens, France, between 1588 and 1594. The league was a powerful group of wealthy lawyers, merchants, and churchmen opposed to the king concerned over the loss of urban privileges, regional loyalties, and the presence of the king's clients within the city. In 1594 the city capitulated to Henry IV, marking the beginning of the league's decline.

The Swiss nation as such certainly was no player in the European penetration and partition of the African continent. However, the work actually proposes an entire reconceptualization of these theories, linking them to a more "fundamental" philosophical and anthropological project which, Staiger tells us, might more appropriately read as a work of philosophical anthropology attempting to answer the question, "What is man?" It not only offers a fact-filled survey of the Swiss presence in Canada's vast province of Ontario, covering some three centuries, but it is also produced by Swiss Canadians. The text is .written by "a descendant of Johannes Etter, a Swiss innkeeper," the study's end page explains; in 1735 he had left Bern, Switzerland, with about 300 others for South Carolina. Professor Fritz Marti passed away in his sleep November 23, 1991, in Tucson, Arizona, where he lived with a daughter since 1987. He would have been 98 years old on January 1st. Born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1894, Marti served in the Swiss Army during the First World War as an engineer and as an intelligence officer in England at the war's outset, preventing German nationals from returning to Germany under the guise of Swiss citizenship. He took his Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Bern in 1922 and came to the United States that year to teach at …
