1845 on July 17th, we purchased for the esteemed Emigration Society of the Canton of Glarus, at the land office in Mineral Point, Wisconsin Territory, 1200 (twelve hundred) acres of land, namely in Greene County township 4 range 7, at the government price of 1 1/ 4 dollars per acre which on the following days we had surveyed and divided up in 60 lots (parcels) by the surveyor Comfort whom we had to pay wages of 3 dollars per day. Events in and around us shape our destiny. Roadblocks and crossroads force us to choose an unplanned route. 1939-45 was such a time when many lives were drastically changed, due to the dramatic developments in Europe and the Far East. These events were to alter the course of my life also.

At 11:10 A.M., April 1, 1944, American military authorities in London received the following "strike message" from aircraft attacking a target in Europe: "392 Group bombed Last Resort with poor results at 10:50 hours. " This terse communication described the "gravest violation " of Swiss neutrality during the Second World War--in fact, during the entire twentieth century: the bombing of the city of Schafthausen by planes of the 2nd Division of the American 8th Army Air Force.

In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will

celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of

this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate

1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe

with the entire Grand View community the influence of

the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.

What, after all, could be more fitting for a college

whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly

declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought

to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.

Grundtvig an institutional presence?"

In 1892, at the invitation of a Danish immigrant who had married a Cherokee woman in what was then Indian Territory, the Danish Lutheran Church Association sent a student from Trinity Seminary in Blair, Nebraska, to investigate the possibility of doing mission work among the Cherokee. The student, Niels Laurits Nielsen, returned in the summer of 1893 and began working among the Cherokee, eventually founding a school and a church at Oaks, Oklahoma. There have been many Scandinavian immigrants who have left their hearts in the great American Southwest. Nels Christian Nelson, a Danish-American pioneer whom the Curator of the American Museum of Natural History chose "as one of the eight characters who shaped American archaeology"1 was one of them. What captivated this impoverished Danish teen-ager in the United States and finally in the arid high deserts of New Mexico? ·Perhaps a review of Mr. Nelson's life will paint a clearer picture of this adventuresome, intelligent Danish-American.

The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj

Coming into the small Iowa town of Kimballton from any direction, the spire of Immanuel Lutheran Church, which stands on a high point in the town, is clearly visible. The early Danish immigrants who built this church intended the church spire to be a beacon to those entering the town. The centennial of Immanuel Lutheran Church will be celebrated in 1997. To those Danish immigrants who were responsible for building this church, this article is dedicated.

Benedicte Wrensted Danish Photographer In Idaho Rediscovered, Joanna Scherer

In 1979 a book The American Image: Photographs from

the National Archives, 1860-1960 was published. It was

based on an exhibit of the same name, which opened at the

National Archives in Washington, D. C. in November, 1979.

In the forward James Rhoads, archivist of the United

States, tells about how the photos were selected.

Anders Kristian Andersen 1825-1920, Anders K. Andersen

The Bridge

Richard Sandager was given this manuscript (written in

Danish by his grandfather) when he visited Denmark in

1965. He received it from A. Kristian Andersen, another

grandson of Anders Kristian Andersen, who lived on the

old family farm. He was a Representative to the Danish

Parliament in Copenhagen at that time.

N.F.S Grundtvig's Idea Of Folklore: Resurrecting Folk-Life Through The Living Word, Gregory Hansen

In Danish settlements throughout the United States,

Jmmigrants often formed reading clubs within which their

members could read, discuss, and circulate recent Danish

publications. One such club, the "Tolvten" (The Dozen),

was founded in Chicago in 1897 and remained in existence

until 1977.
