Maintaining The Neutrality: Soviet-Japanese Relations, 1941-1945, Michael Shawn Blevins
Maintaining The Neutrality: Soviet-Japanese Relations, 1941-1945, Michael Shawn Blevins
History Theses & Dissertations
In April 1941, the Soviet Union and Japan concluded a five-year neutrality pact. Before the end of the year both nations were embroiled in bitter wars against each other' allies, but not against one another. How did Soviet.— Japanese wartime relations preserve this neutrality that lasted nearly four years during World War II? The answers are provided through analysis of both Soviet and Japanese foreign policies while also considering each nation's prospects for winning the war. To this end, timely MAGIC and ULTRA signal intelligence intercepts provide key insights into each government's intentions. Thus, the Special Research History and the …
Partnership Of Necessity: The Anglo-American Intelligence Relationship From 1921 To 1942, H. Douglas Brooks Iii
Partnership Of Necessity: The Anglo-American Intelligence Relationship From 1921 To 1942, H. Douglas Brooks Iii
History Theses & Dissertations
Throughout the period between the two world wars, Great Britain and the United States were embroiled in an imperialistic rivalry focused heavily in East Asia. The strong sense of competition and mistrust between the navies of the two nations hindered the development of close cooperation as war became imminent in the late 1930s. This state of affairs encompassed every aspect of naval operations, including signal intelligence whose officials sought to forge a working relationship beneficial to both countries in the opening days of the Second world War. Old prejudices and outdated perceptions of national interest were difficult to overcome even …

The Atlantic Conference At Argentia (9-12 August 1941) The Anglo-American Agreement On The Defeat Of Nazi Germany, John Michael Sweeney
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The meeting at Argentina, Newfoundland, between Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in August 1941 was the first "summit" conference of the Second World War. It set the stage for the United States' entry into the war on the side of Great Britain and produced the Atlantic Charter, the noble statement of Western war aims. This study describes how the Nazi threat to England and the Atlantic brought the two democracies together into a de facto alliance before the United States formally entered the war. Its central theme is the "strategy of provocation" whereby President Roosevelt, certain …
The Ottoman Reaction To The Annexation Of Bosnia-Herzegovina In 1908 By Austria-Hungary, Yücel Yanikdağ
The Ottoman Reaction To The Annexation Of Bosnia-Herzegovina In 1908 By Austria-Hungary, Yücel Yanikdağ
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the reaction of the Ottoman Government and people to the annexation of Bosnia- Herzegovina in 1908. The people organized a boycott of Austro-Hungarian goods and services. The Government, under the Grand Vizierate of Kamil Pasha, was able to use the boycott and the support of the other Powers to drive a hard bargain with Austria. In the end, Austria paid T£2,500,000 and offered economic concessions in return for the Ottoman recognition of the annexation. This study makes use of published German, Austrian, British, and Turkish documents as well as unpublished archival documents.
Political Interference In Military Operations During The Anglo-Zulu War Of 1879, Thomas Max Lansford
Political Interference In Military Operations During The Anglo-Zulu War Of 1879, Thomas Max Lansford
History Theses & Dissertations
This work examines the degree and effect of the reluctant cooperation of the British government and its colonial agencies with the British army during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. While it is clear that there was no civilian conspiracy to interfere with the army, it is also clear that several of the policies of the government and its colonial agencies hindered army operations. The study is based on the War Office narrative of military operations, on Colonial and War Office correspondence, and on the memoirs and diaries of several participants.
The Riga Mission: The Reports Of The First American Outpost On The Soviet Border, 1924-1933, Jeffrey Acosta
The Riga Mission: The Reports Of The First American Outpost On The Soviet Border, 1924-1933, Jeffrey Acosta
History Theses & Dissertations
From 1917 to 1933, the United States did not recognize the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In 1920 the United States established conditions for recognition. First, the Soviet Union had to pay all debts owed to the United States government and its citizens by previous Russian and Soviet governments. In addition, all propaganda and subversive activities sponsored by the Soviet Union in the United States had to cease. During this period, the Division of Eastern European Affairs (DEEA) studied and collected data about the Soviet Union from its main "outpost" at the United States Mission in Riga, Latvia. The Russian …

The United States And German Reunification: The Stalin Note Of 1952, Klaus P. Grillmaier
The United States And German Reunification: The Stalin Note Of 1952, Klaus P. Grillmaier
Masters Theses
This thesis discusses the American and West German reaction to the Soviet note of March 10, 1952. In this so-called Stalin Note the Soviet dictator proposed the reunification of Germany on terms of neutrality and acceptance of the Oder and Neisse rivers as the German-Polish border. By launching his proposal Stalin sought to prevent the integration of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) into the Western alliance system.
The paper starts out sketching the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as superpowers after World War II. It also analyzes the impact the Cold War had on Europe. …
The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner
The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner
Masters Theses
Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938 was the cumulation of almost twenty years of Austrian dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Saint Germain, the lack of consistent political and economic support by the western democracies and the international instability of the 1930s. All these factors worked in favor of pro-Anschluss Germans and Austrians and to the handicap of the allies. Once Adolf Hitler came to power, he drastically changed German policy toward Austria. Anschluss had special significance for Hitler and his decision to abandon an evolutionary revision of Austria's political status to one of radical expansionism and annexation proved fatal …
The American-British Alliance Of World War Ii And The Debate Over European Strategy, Emory Allen Burton
The American-British Alliance Of World War Ii And The Debate Over European Strategy, Emory Allen Burton
History Theses & Dissertations
The American-British Alliance of World Mar II did not evolve by chance but was the result of deliberate steps wh1ch can be traced back to 1938 when naval coordination talks were conducted in London. These talks emerged from an American evaluation of defense commitments in the Pacific and recognition that British cooperation would be valued in a future war.
The theme of this study is the development of the alliance and how that process was influenced by the debate over the strategy for the war in Europe. The most important decision in this process was the Europe first policy. Roosevelt …

The Rhetorical Factors Applied To The Reorientation Of American Public Opinion Toward The Soviet Union Immediately After June 22, 1941, Stanley Paul Berry
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis asks the question: what rhetorical factors were applied to the reorientation of American public opinion toward the Soviet Union immediately after June 22, 1941. A brief review of American diplomatic trends leading to June 22, 1941 is provided. The term rhetoric is operationally defined and the limits establishing causation between persuasion and opinion are delineated. The national communication process is explained and a national opinion profile, as it existed in the spring of 1941, is described. Initial persuasive responses to the Russo-German war are addressed and analyzed. The primary persuasive goals are identified as improving the public's image …

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the foreign policy inter-action between Britain and Germany from January, 1933 to June, 1936, and to analyse British action, reaction and aims in foreign policy during that time.
In Chapter I, I deal with three broad ideas by way of introduction. First, there is an analysis of those groups which are acting and reacting in the sphere of foreign policy. There are four groups enumerated: the governmental or official group; the parliamentary group; the press; and, finally, public opinion. The make-up of these groups, the sources for discovering their reactions, and the …
French Diplomacy In Italy, 1450-1463, Mary Jane Callahan
French Diplomacy In Italy, 1450-1463, Mary Jane Callahan
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the intricacies of the diplomatic policies of the French in the Italian states of Naples, Milan and Genoa in the middle of the fifteenth century. The particular emphasis concerns French activity with regard to claims in Naples and Milan and control of Genoa during the latter years of the reign of Charles VII and the first two years of his son, Louis XI. The Kingdom of Naples was claimed by Rene of. Anjou, brother-in-law of Charles VII, as the named successor of the Neapolitan queen, Joanna II. Charles of Orleans, another brother-in-law, claimed the Duchy of Milan …

France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens
France, The United States And The Spanish-American War, Richard Henry Owens
History Theses & Dissertations
The present study is an examination of the effect of the Spanish-American War on the formal relations of France and the United States. Because France was the neighbor and friend of Spain and also at least an erstwhile friend of the United States, the war presented certain difficulties for the French government. At home colonialists and royalists sympathetic to Spain demanded overt support of the Spanish cause. The Spanish government looked to France first to lead a diplomatic coalition against the United States and then to mediate the dispute. The United States, meanwhile, urged Paris to follow a policy of …
Mission Of Mercy: The U.S. Military Mission In Berlin, 1919, Thomas R. Magnuson
Mission Of Mercy: The U.S. Military Mission In Berlin, 1919, Thomas R. Magnuson
Master's Theses
My topic for this thesis, the U. S. Military Mission in Berlin in 1919, was the organization responsible for tending to allied prisoners imprisoned in Germany after the First World War. Most of these prisoners were Russians cut off from their homes by the Russian Revolution and the allied strategy for containing the Soviet threat. At no time did the Mission's staff number over 1,000, but this small organization worked wonders in sustaining and repatriating thousands of non-American prisoners. The scope of the Mission's work created numerous problems in organization and presentation.
There were two organizations involved with the U. …
The United States Great Britain And The Status Of Thailand (Siam), 1940-1946, Peter Goodwin
The United States Great Britain And The Status Of Thailand (Siam), 1940-1946, Peter Goodwin
History Theses & Dissertations
This paper traces the changes in the attitudes and policies of the United States towards the Southeast Asian country of Thailand during the Second World War. From a position of indifference the United States assumed an active role in the emergence of Thailand as a sovereign nation at the conclusion of the war, encouraging pro-American factions and opposing a traditional power of the area, Great Britain.
The emphasis of the paper is on the different attitudes held by Britain and the United States and the efforts to reconcile them. The British expected recompense by the Thais for allying themselves with …
The United States And The Anschluss; Reactions And Repercussions, Joseph Pociask
The United States And The Anschluss; Reactions And Repercussions, Joseph Pociask
History Theses & Dissertations
The American reaction to a critical act of aggression is studied in its many facets. Using a case study approach, the Administration's response to the Anschluss is considered in detail and conclusions are drawn regarding the Anschluss problem specifically and the foreign policy of the Roosevelt Administration in general. Among the repercussions are the diplomatic reaction, the dispute over the pending sale of helium, the Austrian debt, the refugee problem and other problems of a more technical nature which often arise in the forcible takeover of a nation. The State Department and the Administration do not emerge as successful manipulators …
Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan
Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan
Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the period of the American Revolution, Great Britain pursued a policy of reconciliation and reunion toward its North American colonies. While this was but one of the several policy alternatives open to British leadership, it was always an element of British strategy toward the colonies from 1775 to 1783.
This thesis follows the evolution of reconciliation and reunion in the final days of crisis in 1774-1775. It seeks to define its development during the war itself, and especially during the abortive American Peace Commission of 1778. By tracing this policy from its emergence through to the peacemaking in 1782-1783, …

The 1958 Good Offices Mission And Its Implications For French-American Relations Under The Fourth Republic, Lorin James Anderson
The 1958 Good Offices Mission And Its Implications For French-American Relations Under The Fourth Republic, Lorin James Anderson
Dissertations and Theses
In both a general review of Franco-American relations and in a more specific discussion of the Anglo-American good offices mission to France in 1958, this thesis has attempted first, to analyze the foreign policies of France and the United States which developed from the impact of the Second World War and, second, to describe Franco-American discord as primarily a collision of foreign policy goals--or, even farther, as a basic collision in the national attitudes that shaped those goals--rather than as a result either of Communist harassment or of the clash of personalities.
