The Mexican War was not waged for the purpose of acquiring Texas by force since Texas had become a part of the United States after having won her independence. The Mexican war was fought for this reason and not for that so often given that the United States instigated it because of a lust for additional territory. Mexico, thought refusing to recognize this independence, accepted the inevitable, but did not consider the strip of land between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers as Texas territory.
