Finally in the 1880’s there emerged a reformist group which was ultimately to be the model of the viability, adaptability, effectiveness, and success of evolutionary socialism. The group called itself the Fabian Society and in the beginning it seemed to be not unlike other protest or reformist groups which were springing up all over England at the time. The difference was that this group, though always small in numbers, was to have a tremendous impact throughout England and the rest of the democratic world. The abrogation of the Gentlemen's Agreement. and the manner in which it was achieved deeply hurt Japanese pride, which had reached new proportions in the 20th century. The American action was interpreted as a deliberate affront to a friendly nation, and upset the traditional amity which had characterized American-Japanese relations since the opening of Japan by 'Commodore Mathew C. Perry. The Mexican War was not waged for the purpose of acquiring Texas by force since Texas had become a part of the United States after having won her independence. The Mexican war was fought for this reason and not for that so often given that the United States instigated it because of a lust for additional territory. Mexico, thought refusing to recognize this independence, accepted the inevitable, but did not consider the strip of land between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers as Texas territory.

A journey made in November and December (1897) over the Transcaspian Military Railway in Russian Central Asia. Until quite recently the very greatest difficulties were placed in the way of any foreigner who tried to penetrate the region which is bordered roughly on the west by the Caspian, on the north by Khiva and the Turkestan Desert, on the east by the great mountain walls of Afghanistan, Turkestan, and India, and on the south by Persia and Afghanistan.
