The fifteenth century marked the commencement of two trends which signaled the end of the medieval era and the dawn of modernity: the emergence of centralized monarchies and the introduction of print culture. Both trends were gradual and in their infancy in the fifteenth century, but their successive paths of development were closely intertwined. Throughout the early modern era, monarchs with aspirations of imposing an absolute and uncontested authority on their often recalcitrant subjects utilized the “new art” (ars nova) of printing to realize their aims. Michael Eisner, the latest gentleman sportsman of our time, announced this week that the new Disney entry in the National Hockey League would be named after a film, and be called "The Mighty Ducks" of Anaheim. They will play in a facility called The Pond. And so with one sweep of his sleazy pen Eisner has degraded hockey and infringed on a fifty-year-old baseball cliche. "Ducks on the Pond" will never again sound the same.

This past weekend in one of those nameless faceless tennis tournaments that no one pays much attention to, Martina Navratilova made tennis history by becoming the oldest player to ever defeat a number one ranked player. At age 36 years, 3 months and 29 days, Martina beat the 19 year old Monica Seles in three sets, winning a third set tie breaker. This match ended Seles' winning streak at 34 matches.

A week ago the National Football League and the NFL Players Association reached an agreement on a new seven year contract, marking the end of a labor dispute that goes back to the twenty four day strike of 1987. The settlement was reached three weeks after an apparent agreement had broken down, and four months after a federal jury in Minneapolis had ruled Plan-B free agency to be in violation of anti-trust laws. Following that decision Judge David Doty urged both parties to arrive at a settlement of their dispute, telling them that he would impose a settlement if necessary.

Three weeks ago the National Hockey League announced at the their winter meetings in Anaheim that they were expanding again, this time adding teams in Miami and Disneyland, While the addition of the Wayne Huizenga's Blockbuster video money is an important coup for the league, it pales next to the addition of the Disney Company as a franchise owner.

"Parting Friends": Southeastern Kentucky Funeral Customs. 1880-1915, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel (Mcguire)

At the turn of the twentieth century, southeastern Kentucky remained a sparsely settled region where traditional values abounded. Throughout society, funeral rites and changes in them evince values of family, community, and religion. Visitors to the area, whether settlement-school teachers, preachers, or researchers, vividly described deathbeds, burials, and funeral occasions which illuminate local values.

Reflecting the writers' urban prejudices, these Journals and publications along with contemporary newspaper accounts provide insight into southeastern Kentucky mourning customs during the years 1880 to 1915. Although the turn of the twentieth century brought change in the way urban dwellers dealt with mourning, their mountain …

Kentucky Shakers were particularly adept at the process of producing silk. Kentucky's temperate climate was conducive to mulberry tree cultivation and sericulture, the raising of silkworms. South Union Sisters hatched and grew silkworms to harvest the delicate silk fibers they used in the manufacture of kerchiefs, neckwear, hat bands, bonnets, and sewing silk. Occasionally entire garments such as dresses were made from the luxurious silk.
