Orphans And Guardians In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Sarah M. Goldberger

History Theses & Dissertations

This study will demonstrate that changes in the early American family can often indicate significant changes in early American culture. These changes are especially apparent in the ways in which eighteenth-century Tidewater Virginians provided for poor and wealthy orphans in Middlesex and Henrico counties. Employing a patriarchal system of patronage, colonial Virginians relied upon both the local community and individual households to care for the colony's orphans. As the early American household became more nuclear and sentimental in the late eighteenth century, such relationships of patronage between the household and community began to erode. It was about as varied a week in sport for me as I can remember. I have been off to western Canada where the big story was the Brier, or I guess I should say the Labatt's Brier, Canada's national curling championship, being contested in Calgary at the Saddl edome, or rather the Canadian Airlines Saddledome. Some things don't change even when you cross the 49th parallel. The television and newspapers were full of stories from the Brier, which drew almost a quarter of a million people to the Saddledome during the week, riveting the attention of a nation.

Once upon a time he was the scourge of the NBA. He skipped practices and road trips; head-butted two players and then a referee; threw a bag of ice at his coach in San Antonio; used profanity in a live post-game interview; and kicked a television cameraman in the groin at a game in the Target Center. All of this earned him 24 games in suspensions, a suspension from one playoff series, and one indefinite suspension, $67,000 in fines, and millions in lost wages.

There is always one little item that catches the eye; the one that both embodies and summarizes the excess. This year for me it is the Little Penny Commercial. Here in Fantasyland they have been touting the making of this little obscenity of American excess for the past several weeks. Celebrities have been rolling in and out of town, in and out of their limos and private jets, to be seen in this year's breathlessly awaited Super Bowl commercial. The parties have been numerous, the celebrity watching prime, and the press coverage worthy of the outbreak of World War III.

The breakdown of authority is often cited as a primary cause of the disorders and maladies of society. The loss of respect for authority is seen as a major problem among the young. Many of the symbols of authority have lost their luster and seem no longer capable of evoking deference.

If the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars meet in Super Bowl XXXI Pete Rozelle will come back to present the trophy. He will do so not only to symbolize the extraterrestrial character of the event, but also to symbolize how deeply Rozelle's legacy of parity has become ingrained into the fabric of the National Football League.

Wool, next to cotton, is perhaps the most important of all textile fibers. Like most of their contemporaries, the Shakers of South Union, Kentucky, recognized the ease with which wool fibers were spun into yarn and the advantages of sturdy wool clothing. South Union’s textile industry grew from a simple carding mill to a full-fledged woolen factory with a 240-spindle spinning jack and 4 power looms. From its genesis in 1815 to its abrupt demised in 1868, the sect’s woolen industry provides a paradigm for the study of the United States’ textile industrialization.

In the aftermath of the anniversary celebrations held to commemorate women's right to vote, it is fitting to remember an Adams county resident who figured prominently in the most militant phase of the suffrage campaign-Lavinia Lloyd Dock.

Lavinia Dock was born February 26, 1858, the second child of Gilliard and Lavinia Lloyd Bombaugh Dock. Gilliard, who had attended Gettysburg College, was a well-to-do engineer and machinist. Both parents were liberal in their views. Lavinia said that "Father had some whimsical masculine prejudices, but Mother was broad on all subjects and very tolerant and charitable towards persons." The Autumn Celebrations Of The Ritual Calendar Year In The Later-Stuart Period, Alexander James Dove

Masters Theses

This thesis discusses the patterns in the celebrations of the autumn ritual calendar of the later-Stuart period. It focuses on the annual celebrations of the Gunpowder Treason and Plot (5th of November) and the Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth (17th of November). For comparison, the Lord Mayor's Show (29th of October) is studied. The central theme of this thesis is to distinguish between the customs and traditions of the two dominant cultures of the later-Stuart period: elite and non-elite.

This thesis is broken down into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the November celebrations of the later-Stuart period. …
